Strange Things Volume II: Triffin's Dilemma and The Dollar Milkshake

Strange Things Volume II: Triffin's Dilemma and The Dollar Milkshake
As the Fed begins their journey into a deflationary blizzard, they are beginning to break markets across the globe. As the World Reserve Currency, over 60% of all international trade is done in Dollars, and USDs are the largest Foreign Exchange (Forex) holdings by far for global central banks. Now all foreign currencies are crashing against the Dollar as the vicious feedback loops of Triffin’s Dilemma come home to roost. The Dollar Milkshake has begun.
The Fed, knowingly or unknowingly, has walked into this trap- and now they find themselves caught underneath the Sword of Damocles, with no way out…

Sword Of Damocles
--------------------------
“The famed “sword of Damocles” dates back to an ancient moral parable popularized by the Roman philosopher Cicero in his 45 B.C. book “Tusculan Disputations.” Cicero’s version of the tale centers on Dionysius II, a tyrannical king who once ruled over the Sicilian city of Syracuse during the fourth and fifth centuries B.C.
Though rich and powerful, Dionysius was supremely unhappy. His iron-fisted rule had made him many enemies, and he was tormented by fears of assassination—so much so that he slept in a bedchamber surrounded by a moat and only trusted his daughters to shave his beard with a razor.
As Cicero tells it, the king’s dissatisfaction came to a head one day after a court flatterer named Damocles showered him with compliments and remarked how blissful his life must be. “Since this life delights you,” an annoyed Dionysius replied, “do you wish to taste it yourself and make a trial of my good fortune?” When Damocles agreed, Dionysius seated him on a golden couch and ordered a host of servants wait on him. He was treated to succulent cuts of meat and lavished with scented perfumes and ointments.
Damocles couldn’t believe his luck, but just as he was starting to enjoy the life of a king, he noticed that Dionysius had also hung a razor-sharp sword from the ceiling. It was positioned over Damocles’ head, suspended only by a single strand of horsehair.
From then on, the courtier’s fear for his life made it impossible for him to savor the opulence of the feast or enjoy the servants. After casting several nervous glances at the blade dangling above him, he asked to be excused, saying he no longer wished to be so fortunate.”
—---------------
Damocles’ story is a cautionary tale of being careful of what you wish for- Those who strive for power often unknowingly create the very systems that lead to their own eventual downfall. The Sword is often used as a metaphor for a looming danger; a hidden trap that can obliterate those unaware of the great risk that hegemony brings.
Heavy lies the head which wears the crown.

There are several Swords of Damocles hanging over the world today, but the one least understood and least believed until now is Triffin’s Dilemma, which lays the bedrock for the Dollar Milkshake Theory. I’ve already written extensively about Triffin’s Dilemma around a year ago in Part 1.5 and Part 4.3 of my Dollar Endgame Series, but let’s recap again.
Here’s a great summary- read both sides of the dilemma:

Triffin's Dilemma Summarized

(Seriously, stop here and go back and read Part 1.5 and Part 4.3 Do it!)

Essentially, Triffin noted that there was a fundamental flaw in the system: by virtue of the fact that the United States is a World Reserve Currency holder, the global financial system has built in GLOBAL demand for Dollars. No other fiat currency has this.
How is this demand remedied? With supply of course! The United States thus is forced to run current account deficits - meaning it must send more dollars out into the world than it receives on a net basis. This has several implications, which again, I already outlined- but I will list in summary format below:
  1. The United States has to be a net importer, ie it must run trade deficits, in order to supply the world with dollars. Remember, dollars and goods are opposite sides of the same equation, so a greater trade deficits means that more dollars are flowing out to the world.
  2. (This will devastate US domestic manufacturing, causing political/social/economic issues at home.)
  3. These dollars flow outwards into the global economy, and are picked up by institutions in a variety of ways.
  4. First, foreign central banks will have to hold dollars as Foreign Exchange Reserves to defend their currency in case of attack on the Forex markets. This was demonstrated during the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997-98, when the Thai Baht, Malaysian Ringgit, and Philippine Peso (among other East Asian currencies) plunged against the Dollar. Their central banks attempted to defend the pegs but they failed.
  5. Second, companies will need Dollars for trade- as the USD makes up over 60% of global trade volume, and has the deepest and most liquid forex market by far, even small firms that need to transact cross border trade will have to acquire USDs in order to operate. When South Africa and Chile trade, they don’t want to use Mexican Pesos or Korean Won- they want Dollars.
  6. Foreign governments need dollars. There are several countries already who have adopted the Dollar as a replacement for their own currency- Ecuador and Zimbabwe being prime examples. There’s a full list here.
  7. Third world governments that don’t fully adopt dollars as their own currencies will still use them to borrow. Argentina has 70% of it’s debt denominated in dollars and Indonesia has 30%, for example. Dollar-denominated debt will build up overseas.
The example I gave in Part 1.5 was that of Liberia, a small West African Nation looking to enter global trade. Needing to hold dollars as part of their exchange reserves, the Liberian Central Bank begins buying USDs on the open market. The process works in a similar fashion for large Liberian export companies.

Dollar Recycling

Essentially, they print their own currency to buy Dollars. Wanting to earn interest on this massive cash hoard when it isn’t being used, they buy Treasuries and other US debt securities to get a yield.
As their domestic economy grows, their need and dependence on the Dollar grows as well. Their Central Bank builds up larger and larger hoards of Treasuries and Dollars. The entire thesis is that during times of crisis, they can sell the Treasuries for USD, and use the USDs to buy back their own currency on the market- supporting its value and therefore defending the peg.
This buying pressure on USDs and Treasuries confers a massive benefit to the United States-

The Exorbitant Privilege

This buildup of excess dollars ends up circulating overseas in banks, trade brokers, central banks, governments and companies. These overseas dollars are called the Eurodollar system- a 2016 research paper estimated the size to be around $13.8 Trillion USD. This system is not under official Federal Reserve jurisdiction so it is difficult to get accurate numbers on its size.

This means the Dollar is always artificially stronger than it should be- and during financial calamity, the dollar is a safe haven as there are guaranteed bidders.
All this dollar denominated debt paired with the global need for dollars in trade creates strong and persistent dollar demand. Demand that MUST be satisfied.
This creates systemic risk on a worldwide scale- an unforeseen Sword of Damocles that hangs above the global financial system. I’ve been trying to foreshadow this in my Dollar Endgame Series.
Triffin’s Dilemma is the basis for the Dollar Milkshake Theory posited by Brent Johnson.

The Dollar Milkshake

Milkshake of Liquidity
In 2021, Brent worked with RealVision to create a short summary of his thesis- the video can be found here. I should note that Brent has had this theory for years, dating back to 2018, when he first came on podcasts and interviews and laid out his theory (like this video, for example).
Here’s the summary below:
-----
“A giant milkshake of liquidity has been created by global central banks with the dollar as its key ingredient - but if the dollar moves higher this milkshake will be sucked into the US creating a vicious spiral that could quickly destabilize financial markets.
The US dollar is the bedrock of the world's financial system. It greases the wheels of global commerce and exchange- the availability of dollars, cost of dollars, and the level of the dollar itself each can have an outsized impact on economies and investment opportunities.
But more important than the absolute level or availability of dollars is the rate of change in the level of the dollar. If the level of the dollar moves too quickly and particularly if the level rises too fast then problems start popping up all over the place (foreign countries begin defaulting).
Today however many people are convinced that both the role of the Dollar is diminishing and the level of the dollar will only decline. People think that the US is printing so many dollars that the world will be awash with the greenback causing the value of the dollar to fall.
Now it's true that the US is printing a lot of dollars – but other countries are also printing their own currencies in similar amounts so in theory it should even out in terms of value.
But the hidden issue is the difference in demand. Remember the global financial system is built on the US dollar which means even if they don't want them everybody still needs them and if you need something you don't really have much choice. (See DXY Index):

DXY Index

Although many countries like China are trying to reduce their reliance on dollar transactions this will be a very slow transition. In the meantime the risks of a currency or sovereign debt crisis continue to rise.
But now countries like China and Japan need dollars to buy copper from Australia so the Chinese and the Japanese owe dollars and Australia is getting paid in dollars.
Europe and Asia currently doing very limited amount of non-dollar transactions for oil so they still need dollars to buy oil from saudi and again dollars get hoovered up on both sides
Asia and Europe need dollars to buy soybeans from Brazil. This pulls in yet more dollars - everybody needs dollars for trade invoices, central bank currency reserves and servicing massive cross-border dollar denominated debts of governments and corporations outside the USA.
And the dollar-denominated debt is key- if they don't service their debts or walk away from their dollar debts their funding costs rise putting great financial pressure on their domestic economies. Not only that, it can lead to a credit contraction and a rapid tightening of dollar supply.
The US is happy with the reliance on the greenback they own the settlement system which benefits the US banks who process all the dollars and act as gatekeepers to the Dollar system they police and control the access to the system which benefits the US military machine where defense spending is in excess of any other country so naturally the US benefits from the massive volumes of dollar usage.

https://preview.redd.it/yq1f1anq0uq91.png?width=1140&format=png&auto=webp&s=27447e2acec884848a5c70ab3651820e487fc0f3

Other countries have naturally been grumbling about being held hostage to the situation but the choices are limited. What it does mean is that dollars need to be constantly sucked out of the USA because other countries all over the world need them to do business and of course the more people there are who need and want those dollars the more is the pressure on the price of dollars to go up.
In fact, global demand is so high that the supply of dollars is just not enough to keep up, even with the US continually printing money. This is why we haven't seen consistently rising US inflation despite so many QE and stimulus programs since the global financial crisis in 2008.
But, the real risk comes when other economies start to slow down or when the US starts to grow relative to the other economies. If there is relatively less economic activity elsewhere in the world then there are fewer dollars in global circulation for others to use in their daily business and of course if there are fewer in circulation then the price goes up as people chase that dwindling source of dollars.
Which is terrible for countries that are slowing down because just when they are suffering economically they still need to pay for many goods in dollars and they still need to service their debts which of course are often in dollars too.

So the vortex begins or as we like to say the dollar milkshake- As the level of the dollar rises the rest of the world needs to print more and more of its own currency to then convert to dollars to pay for goods and to service its dollar debt this means the dollar just keeps on rising in response many countries will be forced to devalue their own currencies so of course the dollar rises again and this puts a huge strain on the global system.
(see the charts below:)
JPY/USD

GBP/USD

EUUSD

To make matters worse in this environment the US looks like an attractive safe haven so the US ends up sucking in the capital from the rest of the world-the dollar rises again. Pretty soon you have a full-scale sovereign bond and currency crisis.

https://preview.redd.it/72nlain01uq91.png?width=1141&format=png&auto=webp&s=cbaa411acc88acb3849949d84a36624d75d6cfc4

We're now into that final napalm run that sees the dollar and dollar assets accelerate even higher and this completely undermines global markets. Central banks try to prevent disorderly moves, but the global markets are bigger and the momentum unstoppable once it takes hold.
And that is the risk that very few people see coming but that everyone should have a hedge against - when the US sucks up the dollar milkshake, bad things are going to happen.
Worst of all there's no alternatives- what are you going to use-- Chinese Yuan? Japanese Yen? the Euro??
Now, like it or not we're stuck with a dollar underpinning the global financial system.”
—-------------
Why is it playing out now, in real time?? It all leads back to a tweet I made in a thread on September 16th.

Tweet Thread about the Yuan

The Fed, rushing to avoid a financial crisis in March 2020, printed trillions. This spurred inflation, which they then swore to fight. Thus they began hiking interest rates on March 16th, and began Quantitative Tightening this summer.
QE had stopped- No new dollars were flowing out into a system which has a constant demand for them. Worse yet, they were hiking completely blind-
Although the Fed is very far behind the curve, (meaning they are hiking far too late to really combat inflation)- other countries are even farther behind!
Japan has rates currently at 0.00- 0.25%, and the Eurozone is at 1.25%. These central banks have barely begun hiking, and some even swear to keep them at the zero-bound. By hiking domestic interest rates above foreign ones, the Fed is incentivizing what are called carry trades.
Since there is a spread between the Yen and the Dollar in terms of interest rates, it thus is profitable for traders to borrow in Yen (shorting it essentially) and buy Dollars, which can earn 2.25% interest. The spread would be around 2%.
DXY rises, and the Yen falls, in a vicious feedback loop.
Thus capital flows out of Japan, and into the US. The US sucks up the Dollar Milkshake, draining global liquidity. As I’ve stated before, this has seriously dangerous implications for the global financial system.
For those of you who don’t believe this could be foreseen, check out the ending paragraphs of Dollar Endgame Part 4.3 - “Economic Warfare and the End of Bretton Woods” published February 16, 2022:

Triffin's Dilemma is the Final Nail

What I’ve been attempting to do in my work is restate Triffins’ Dilemma, and by extension the Dollar Milkshake, in other terms- to come at the issue from different angles.
Currently the Fed is not printing money. Which is thus causing havoc in global trade (seen in the currency markets) because not enough dollars are flowing out to satisfy demand.
The Fed must therefore restart QE unless it wants to spur a collapse on a global scale. Remember, all these foreign countries NEED to buy, borrow and trade in a currency that THEY CANNOT PRINT!
We do not have enough time here to go in depth on the Yen, Yuan, Pound or the Euro- all these currencies have different macro factors and trade factors which affect their currencies to a large degree. But the largest factor by FAR is Triffin’s Dilemma + the Dollar Milkshake, and their desperate need for dollars. That is why basically every fiat currency is collapsing versus the Dollar.
The Fed, knowingly or not, is basically in charge of the global financial system. They may shout, “We raise rates in the US to fight inflation, global consequences be damned!!” - But that’s a hell of a lot more difficult to follow when large G7 countries are in the early stages of a full blown currency crisis.
The most serious implication is that the Fed is responsible for supplying dollars to everyone. When they raise rates, they trigger a margin call on the entire world. They need to bail them out by supplying them with fresh dollars to stabilize their currencies.
In other words, the Fed has to run the loosest and most accommodative monetary policy worldwide- they must keep rates as low as possible, and print as much as possible, in order to keep the global financial system running. If they don’t do that, sovereigns begin to blow up, like Japan did last week and like England did on Wednesday.
And if the world’s financial system implodes, they must bail out not only the United States, but virtually every global central bank. This is the Sword of Damocles. The money needed for this would be well in the dozens of trillions.
The Dollar Endgame Approaches…
—-------------------------------------------------------------

Q&A

(Many of you have been messaging me with questions, rebuttals or comments. I’ll do my best to answer some of the more poignant ones here.)

—-----
Q: I’ve been reading your work, you keep saying the dollar is going to fall in value, and be inflated away. Now you’re switching sides and joining the dollar bull faction. Seems like you don’t know what you’re talking about!
A: You’re mixing up my statements. When I discuss the dollar losing value, I am referring to it falling in ABSOLUTE value, against goods and services produced in the real economy. This is what is called inflation. I made this call in 2021, and so far, it has proven right as inflation has accelerated.
The dollar gaining strength ONLY applies to foreign currency exchange markets (Forex)- remember, DXY, JPYUSD, and other currency pairs are RELATIVE indicators of value. Therefore, both JPY and USD can be falling in real terms (inflation) but if one is falling faster, then that one will lose value relative to the other. Also, Forex markets are correlated with, but not an exact match, for inflation.
I attempted to foreshadow the entire dollar bull thesis in the conclusion of Part 1 of the Dollar Endgame, posted well over a year ago-

Unraveling of the Currency Markets

I did not give an estimate on when this would happen, or how long DXY would be whipsawed upwards, because I truly do not know.
I do know that eventually the Fed will likely open up swap lines, flooding the Eurodollar market with fresh greenbacks and easing the dollar short squeeze. Then selling pressure will resume on the dollar. They would only likely do this when things get truly calamitous- and we are on our way towards getting there.
The US bond market is currently in dire straits, which matches the prediction of spiking interest rates. The 2yr Treasury is at 4.1%, it was at 3.9% just a few days ago. Only a matter of time until the selloff gets worse.
—------
Q: Foreign Central banks can find a way out. They can just use their reserves to buy back their own currency.
Sure, they can try that. It’ll work for a while- but what happens once they run out of reserves, which basically always happens? I can’t think of a time in financial history that a country has been able to defend a currency peg against a sustained attack.

Global Forex Reserves

They’ll run out of bullets, like they always do, and basically the only option left will be to hike interest rates, to attract capital to flow back into their country. But how will they do that with global debt to GDP at 356%? If all these countries do that, they will cause a global depression on a scale never seen before.
Britain, for example, has a bit over $100B of reserves. That provides maybe a few months of cover in the Forex markets until they’re done.
Furthermore, you are ignoring another vicious feedback loop. When the foreign banks sell US Treasuries, this drives up yields in the US, which makes even more capital flow to the US! This weakens their currency even further.

FX Feedback Loop

To add insult to injury, this increases US Treasury borrowing costs, which means even if the Fed completely ignores the global economy imploding, the US will pay much more in interest. We will reach insolvency even faster than anyone believes.
The 2yr Treasury bond is above 4%- with $31T of debt, that means when we refinance we will pay $1.24 Trillion in interest alone. Who's going to buy that debt? The only entity with a balance sheet large enough to absorb that is the Fed. Restarting QE in 3...2…1…
—----
Q: I live in England. With the Pound collapsing, what can I do? What will happen from here? How will the governments respond?
England, and Europe in general, is in serious trouble. You guys are currently facing a severe energy crisis stemming from Russia cutting off Nord Stream 1 in early September and now with Nord Stream 2 offline due to a mysterious leak, energy supplies will be even more tight.
Not to mention, you have a pretty high debt to GDP at 95%. Britain is a net importer, and is still running government deficits of £15.8 billion (recorded in Q1 2022). Basically, you guys are the United States without your own large scale energy and defense sector, and without Empire status and a World Reserve Currency that you once had.
The Pound will almost certainly continue falling against the Dollar. The Bank of England panicked on Wednesday in reaction to a $100M margin call on British pension funds, and now has begun buying long dated (10yr) gilts, or government bonds.
They’re doing this as inflation is spiking there even worse than the US, and the nation faces a currency crisis as the Pound is nearing parity with the Dollar.

BOE announces bond-buying scheme (9/28/22)

I will not sugarcoat it, things will get rough. You need to hold cash, make sure your job, business, or investments are secure (ie you have cashflow) and hunker down. Eliminate any unnecessary purchases. If you can, buy USDs as they will likely continue to rise and will hold value better than your own currency.
If Parliament goes through with more tax cuts, that will only make the fiscal situation worse and result in more borrowing, and thus more money printing in the end.
—----
Q: What does this mean for Gamestop? For the domestic US economy?
Gamestop will continue to operate as I am sure they have been- investing in growth and expanding their Web3 platform.
Fiat is fundamentally broken. This much is clear- we need a new financial system not based on flawed 16th fractional banking principles or “trust me bro” financial intermediaries.
My hope is that they are at the forefront of a new financial system which does not require centralized authorities or custodians- one where you truly own your assets, and debasement is impossible.
I haven’t really written about GME extensively because it’s been covered so well by others, and I don’t feel I have that much to add.
As for the US economy, we are still in a deep recession, no matter what the politicians say- and it will get worse. But our economic troubles, at least in the short term (6 months) will not be as severe as the rest of the world due to the aforementioned Dollar Milkshake.
The debt crisis is still looming, midterms are approaching, and the government continues to deficit spend as if there’s no tomorrow.
As the global monetary system unravels, yields will spike, the deleveraging will get worse, and our dollar will get stronger. The fundamental factors continue to deteriorate.
I’ve covered the US enough so I'll leave it there.
—------
Q: Did you know about the Dollar Milkshake Theory before recently? What did you think of it?
Of course I knew about it, I’ve been following Brent Johnson since he appeared on RealVision and Macrovoices. He laid out the entire theory in 2018 in a long form interview here. I listened to it maybe a couple times, and at the time I thought he was right- I just didn’t know how right he was.
Brent and I have followed each other and been chatting a little on Twitter- his handle is SantiagoAuFund, I highly recommend you give him a follow.

Twitter Chat

I’ve never met him in person, but from what I can see, his predictions are more accurate than almost anyone else in finance. Again, all credit to him- he truly understands the global monetary system on a fundamental level.
I believed him when he said the dollar would rally- but the speed and strength of the rally has surprised me. I’ve heard him predict DXY could go to 150, mirroring the massive DXY squeeze post the 1970s stagflation. He could very easily be right- and the absolute chaos this would mean for global trade and finance are unfathomable.

History of DXY

—----------
Q: The Pound and Euro are falling just because of the energy crisis there. That's it!
Why is the Yen falling then? How about the Yuan? Those countries are not currently undergoing an energy crisis. Let’s review the year to date performance of most fiat currencies vs the dollar:
Japanese Yen: -20.31%
Chinese Yuan: -10.79%
South African Rand: -10.95%
English Pound: -18.18%
Euro: -14.01%
Swiss Franc: -6.89%
South Korean Won: -16.73%
Indian Rupee: -8.60%
Turkish Lira: -27.95%
There are only a handful of currencies positive against the dollar, the most notable being the Russian Ruble and the Brazilian Real- two countries which have massive commodity resources and are strong exporters. In an inflationary environment, hard assets do best, so this is no surprise.
—------
Q: What can the average person do to prepare? What are you doing?
Obligatory this is NOT financial advice
This is an extremely difficult question, as there are so many factors. You need to ask yourself, what is your financial situation like? How much disposable income do you have? What things could you cut back on? I can’t give you specific ideas without knowing your situation.
Personally, I am building up savings and cutting down on expenses. I’m getting ready for a severe recession/depression in the US and trying to find ways to increase my income, maybe a side hustle or switching jobs.
I am holding my GME and not selling- I still have some shares in Fidelity that I need to DRS (I know, sorry, I was procrastinating).
For the next few months, I believe there will be accelerating deflation as interest rates spike and the debt cycle begins to unwind. But like I’ve stated before, this will lead us towards a second Great Depression very rapidly, and to avoid the deflationary blizzard the Fed will restart QE on a scale never seen before.
QE Infinity. This will be the impetus for even worse inflation- 25%+ by this time next year.
It’s hard to prepare for this, and easy to feel hopeless. It’s important to know that we have been through monetary crises before, and society did not devolve into a zombie apocalypse. You are not alone, and we will get through this together.
It’s also important to note that we are holding the most lopsided investment opportunity of a generation. Any money you put in there can be grown by orders of magnitude.
We are at the end of the Central Bankers game- and although it will be painful, we will rid the world of them, I believe, and build a new financial system based on blockchains which will disintermediate the institutions. They have everything to lose.
—------
Q: I want to learn more, where can I do? What can I do to keep up to date with everything?
You can start by reading books, listening to podcasts, and checking the news to stay abreast of developments. I have a book list linked at the end of the Dollar Endgame posts.
I’ll be covering the central bank clown show on Twitter, you can follow me there if you like. I’ll also include links to some of my favorite macro people below:
I’m still finishing up the finale for Dollar Endgame- I should have it out soon. I’m also writing an addendum to the series which is purely Q&A to answer questions and concerns. Sorry for the wait.

Your Primer on Inflation and Currencies

I'll just do a thought dump on these two topics here.
What is inflation?
Text-book definition is it's the general increase of price of goods and services. Yun bubblegum mo na piso dati ngayon dalawang piso na? Bingo. Inflation is a natural occurrence in market economies. You'd hate to have the opposite because it's a trap (insert meme here)
Is all inflation between countries the same?
From a country-to-country basis, no. For example, food is the biggest weighting to Philippine inflation figures with nearly 40%. If food costs troop upwards, Philippine inflation will likely move similarly. This is in contrary to Singapore where food has a smaller weighting to their inflation figures.
Is inflation a problem?
It depends on who you ask. Ideally, you want inflation to be low and consistent. If less than ideal, you just want it to be consistent. You definitely don't want any negative inflation -- that is why Japan welcomes all forms of inflation. You also don't want inflation to be low as a result of low domestic demand; that's what China is currently facing as the odd benefit of their ongoing real-estate crisis and strict COVID policy is dampening demand and ironically keeping inflation low during a time where most developed nations are struggling with it.
Can I protect against inflation by switching PHP to ?
You're not comparing apples to apples. Inflation is the increase on the prices of goods and services; it doesn't affect your currency. One peso is still one peso -- it's just that the purchasing power of the peso changes. You need to understand that if you put 10-pesos in the bank today, it's still 10-pesos in 2023. Many people in phinvest have this misconception na nagiging 8 or 9, trust me, your 10 remains a 10 unless may nagnanakaw sayo; it's just that you can buy less products with it. Knowing the difference of this concept is incredibly important for those learning economics.
Why isn't the BSP moving to strengthen the Peso?
The BSP generally adopts a hands-off approach and just lets the peso float in the free market. However, it intervenes from time to time (like recently) as it sells its dollars and buys pesos in the market to stabilize it. However, this is a short-term solution for volatility. Right now, we're in the middle of the pack. The peso isn't weak, it's just that the dollar is strong.
It has always moved cautiously because you don't want to be the next Venezuela. If the BSP aggressively hikes to strengthen the peso, what it'll likely do is stifle growth within the country and this furthermore leads to the road to Argentina. Gusto niyo ba car loans niyo mag +50%? Thought so.
Pangit ba if mataas ang USD/PHP?
In general, yes. Because the Philippines imports more than its exports since 2010. However, running a negative trade balance isn't always bad. For example, the US has been running a deficit for a very long time. If you're still confused, read up on international trade because it'll be a long topic.
What a rising dollar means is that it's unfavorable for imports and favorable for exports. The pendulum can swing at any time (e.g. USD/PHP at 40s during 2008) and one isn't necessarily better than the other; maybe it's time to improve our export industry by reviving the manufacturing base as Filipino products are getting more competitive versus the dollar. What's important is the relative stability of the PHP. Hindi yun 40 today, 60 tomorrow. Businesses cannot function when forex markets are extremely volatile (they'll likely just close stores if they do). But a gradual increase or decrease is fine because it doesn't shit on their decision making.
Pangit ba if malakas ang Peso?
Like I said, it depends on where you are sa export/import balance. If you're an OFW, you'd hate it because you're suddenly remitting less pesos than you're used to. If you're like Japan in the 1980s, it's the downfall of your economy.
Case study: In the 1980s, Japan's economy was booming. It's the #2 economy behind the United States as its exporting a lot of Toyota, Fujitsu, Panasonic, name it. From Y240 in 1985, it appreciated so much that by 1995 it hit Y80. At its peak, it temporarily made Japan's economy nearly the same size of the US but it hurt export growth and the industrial base so much that Japan never really recovered their number two spot ceding it to China (it now grapples with deflation throughout much of the 2000s).
Case Study #2: Ironically, China learned from this and intentionally made the Yuan undervalued versus the USD throughout most of its economic growth cycle. It does this by buying US currency and treasury notes in the market and this is also why they have massive foreign reserves.
The cheap Yuan gives China an unfair advantage in the export market and couple this with their manufacturing base means the rise of China to be the number-two economy through "Made in China"
I moved from PHP to USD/EUGBP, what do I need to know?
First of all, you lost a bit as the money changer got a bit of their share in your spread. So, all things considered, you already lost money. Since you switched currencies, you're now exposed to that currency and everything that affects it.
Is it okay to hate inflation but like rising wages?
Well, no. You see, not only does the increase of raw materials affect inflation but also rising wages. All else equal, if wages rise and there's one banana left in the supermarket, and you really want to go all-in monkey today -- you'll do a bidding war for that banana. That's how US inflation happened as they gave out stimulus cheques during COVID to prop up the economy.
USDPHP, san ka punta, to da moon.
USDPHP will be favorable short-term but tapers off long-term. This is because the DXY is already at an all-time high with levels not seen since 2002. The US Federal Reserve is hiking rates to tame inflation, but they can only do this as long as employment is high in the US. If the labor market cools, it's expected to let off the gas pedal. The BSP will likely just follow the Fed much like the rest of the central banks of the world. If they hike, we hike. There's only few that resists this trend such as Japan's BoJ or China's PBoC.
If you ask me, I'd say short-term it'll peak at P62-P63. But medium-long, I'd say an average of P55 is likely. If you want to believe UBS (min. P150M in the bank), then they're sticking with P60 as peak. The more you expect a recession to come, the faster you should expect it to cool.
Marcos Golden Era here we go.
Please, bumalik ka na sa philippines kasi nakakabobo nitong statement. Don't attempt subjective politicking in phinvest. Our current predicament is inherited. We inherit our 2022 budget, our trade balance, and even our dollar reserves. Even if Leni wins, you'd be faced with the same headwinds as Marcos. Heck, it's likely same lang nga economic team nila regardless of who sits in Malacanang. I don't see Diokno being replaced anytime soon.
For further questions, just type them sa baba. I'll try to answer them if free time pops up.

How to send a parcel from Toronto to the Philippines?

Hi! I am trying to send a friend a gift for his birthday. I’m from Toronto, and he lives in Mindanao. I’m familiar with the ideas of balikbayan boxes - my father is Filipino so he would regularly send things to his family in the Philippines, but I’m a little confused with sending gifts myself. I also don’t really talk to my father, so I can’t go to him for help.
Anyways, my friend lives in a house with no formal house number. I know his barangay and the rest of the address part, but no house number. He said to write “by (nearest landmark)” in place of a house number.
For example,
Friend’s Name Near the LANDMARK BLANK Compound Barangay BLANK CITY (ZIP) Philippines
Would this work for international shipping from Canada? I want to make sure he receives the gift. I think I vaguely remember my father addressing a package the same way when he sent stuff to his parents, but I don’t remember.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

JFC crushes its Q3 sales/profitability; LPC IPO was dumb and chaotic, just as as predicted (Th:Nov10)

Happy Thursday, Barkada --

The PSE lost 47 points to 6242 ▼0.8%

Thank you to FinanceForever and tanitsuj for implying that my "fictional family", from yesterday's write-up about the PSE's weird rules for IPOs by way of introduction, was actually autobiographical. I'll say this: while I can chug syrup, that skill was not learned at the family dinner table. Read into that what you will. Haha.

Before Investing with TudoFx - Read The Review of TudoFx - Scam or Legit?

Are You Victom of TudoFX Investment Scam ?
TudoFx.com claims to be the best online trading broker serving millions of clients in dozens of countries around the world. But this website is actually a prime example of why we shouldn’t blindly believe claims on the internet. This is a completely anonymous website that ranks among the vast number of fake brokers aiming to cheat inexperienced people out of their money.
They can be contacted by an Australian phone number and email. With their aesthetically appealing website, everything looks perfect at first glance. The only risk that comes with investing with TudoFx.com is the regulatory factor. It’s clear the platform is not regulated and is an offshore investment entity. When you visit a real broker’s website, you can find detailed information about the company that runs it, where it is based, what licenses it has and what regulatory regimes it is subject to.
Tudofx’s website and legal documentation does not even name the legal entity that owns this alleged broker. This means you don’t know exactly who you are dealing with, which is not advisable when your money is on the line.
The website doesn’t list an office address. In the text of the Terms and Conditions it is stated that “this agreement and the relationship between the parties shall be governed by, and interpreted in accordance with the laws of Saint Vincent”. This should presumably mean Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). and located at Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. We also haven’t seen any positive mentions from users. And that’s why we have to investigate the platform. Learn more in our detailed TudoFx REVIEW. Read more on how to protect yourself from investment scams.

How does TudoFx Execute Scam?
The initial step to being misled is online advertisements. They offer splendid ways of life, sports vehicles, and sparkly things. It is a piece of the plan. The initial step is to entice clients to tap on these advertisements.
The advertisements lead to either a scam specialist site or a middle person source. If you fall for either of them, you will get a request to give an email address and a telephone number. These are basic scamming techniques to reach you.
Then another step is to contact the client and push them to contribute interestingly. It gets to end up by the principal wave of con artists, whose work is to snare you to the plan. The primary speculation is significant to fabricate your trust.
The scammers are called account supervisors who are answerable for keeping your resources into disgrace. They may even compensate you a primer total to add certainty to your ventures. Their deposit request will slowly increase, and the client will store an extra 2-3 times until they understand the fraud.
Now, your cash won’t be qualified for withdrawal, and neither you earn any benefit. The representative can keep demands, close accounts, or even sites! The last advance is for the fraudsters to keep what they have taken!

How To Get Money Back from TudoFx ?
The first thing I will recommend is to gather all documents to show you a genuine victim of their scam. This will then be followed by reporting to right bodies. Positive Reports online from several victims of scam has proved that you can get help with a company like Aylarecoup on the internet. They have connections to recovery experts that could get a refund enforced. However, There are also other regulatory bodies that can be used, for example FBI and the police. The challenges of you doing this it never yields results unlike reviews received about aylarecoup from verified Victims of TudoFx and other investment scam platforms.

Is Tudofx.com a Good Broker? Is Tudofx.com Legit?
According to their website, they are hosted by offshore zone.
This offshore zone is notorious for not regulating the activities of brokerage firms. The Financial Services Authority (FSA) of St. Vincent and the Grenadines expressly warns on its website that it does not “regulate, monitor, supervise or license” International Business Companies which engage in forex trading or other types of brokerage.

Azur waves, Chapter 23

Previous, first, next,
Fanfiction.
Chapter 23
Two days had passed since the Siren attack. Every ship in the convoy had sustained damage in one form or another, with two deemed past the point of salvaging, which had their crews evacuated before leaving them to sink, adding to the three we had lost during the attack.
Of the forty-four ships we had left port with, now only thirty-nine remained.
My ships had taken the brunt of the Siren’s attacks and the damage across all of their decks showed it. Turrets and superstructures had been blown apart in some areas, exposing the interior to the outside world.
For the first day most of my ships listed in the water as their pumps worked overtime to get the water out. There wasn’t going to be any long-lasting damage but we would struggle if Sirens were to attack the fleet again. Those that didn't take heavy damage had tried all they could to assist in the repair of the convoy ships.
Strangely, there wasn’t even a scratch on the Warspite despite the fact the ship had taken heavy hits during the battle. From what Hood had told me, an incredibly bright light had shone out from the ship, almost blinding those who saw it. The light had also knocked out the remaining Siren aircraft and left the ship glowing slightly as it repaired itself far quicker than usual.
The source of whatever power Warspite had unleashed was just another mystery to add to the constantly growing list.
“Kommandant. Are you even paying attention?” Z23’s stern tone brought me back to the present.
My eyes refocused on the wall I had been staring at and I looked at the annoyed destroyer sitting opposite to me. “Ah, sorry I was just thinking about something.”
Z23 gave a long sigh and moved a few of the papers that littered the table we were sitting at. She had spent the past two days compiling an after action report on the Siren attack, and had been incredibly diligent with it, even going and compiling the individual reports from all the convoy ships captains. “We have been at this for quite a few hours now. If you wish, we can take a short break to stretch our legs.”
I rubbed my eyes and nodded. We had been at this all morning; Javelin had joined us but I had sent her away when she started to fall asleep. “A break sounds good; it should be around lunchtime now anyway. Let’s just finish what we were on and call it for now.”
Z23 nodded and took a sip of water, then picked up her pen again. “In terms of relative tonnage, Javelin was the most effective at shooting down Siren aircraft, this is probably due to her dual-purpose turrets. However…” her pen taped against the paper as she pondered. “There is still the whole incident around what happened to Warspite. Some of the convoy ships are still having problems with their equipment. Are you able to remember anything at all?”
“No, sorry.” I shrugged. “All I can recall is the ship shaking and hitting my head against something. From what I gathered whatever Warspite did happened after that.”
“Right.” She responded in a dejected tone. Whatever Warspite did had caused havoc on both the convoys and the girl's electrical systems as well. “Warspite can’t seem to remember anything either. I was dozens of kilometres away and still ended up with a splitting headache, being at the epicentre she probably passed out due to a sensory overload.”
“Sounds like the most reasonable explanation.” I agreed. It felt like a punch in the gut lying to them, but Warspite was right, the girls already had enough to worry about.
“It will have to do for now.” Z23 gathered the papers up. “Putting that aside, for a small formation of Battleships and Destroyers to come out on top against two Carriers is nothing short of a miracle. Had it been daytime I worry things would have turned out far worse.”
“We’ll have to stay vigilant until we arrive in New York.” I rubbed the side of my head that had been hit. Despite what Warspite had said it had been a rather minor wound. “To think this is our first proper outing and we already came close to being destroyed. I’m starting to think this whole thing was a bad idea.” I voiced my concerns to Z23, seeing the state of my ships after the attack and knowing a fraction of what was out there had allowed doubt to grow inside me.
Z23 stopped and looked at me with a smile. “We’re alive, that’s all that matters.” She gestured towards the door. “Go get some fresh air, I can sort all this out and then go find where Javelin has wandered off to.”
I gave my thanks to Z23 and left her to work. I had always found paperwork to be a tedious task but she seemed to enjoy it.

I started making my way towards the weather deck, but found myself idly wandering around the internals of the ship, thinking over all the damage the girl's ships had taken. I was well aware that they were connected to the ships and damage seemed to transfer over to their bodies, but shortly after waking up I had gone to see the girls only to find Hood with a rather nasty black eye and Elizabeth limping slightly. My mind just wouldn't let me ignore the creeping thought of what would happen to them if their ships sank. Even with the short amount of time I had spent with them, I now found it impossible to imagine trying to go on without any of them.
The sound of someone breathing heavily pulled me away from my thoughts. I noticed I had wandered all the way over to the ship's stores. If the ship had a full crew the rooms would have been filled to the brim with foodstuffs, but right now they were mostly empty.
One of the room's lights was on and the sound seemed to be coming from inside. Knowing that nobody could be on the ship without Warspite knowing I wasn’t overly worried about stowaways so I casually walked over to the door to see what was going on.
The sight I was greeted with was a rather amusing one. Warspite counted to herself as she did push ups, with several beads of sweat dripping from her brow. From the sheer amount of strain it took her to rise and the long breaths she took, she was obviously at a high number.
She noticed my presence, and gave a slight nod before continuing.
I took a quick glance around the room. Her scarf, gloves and jacket had been neatly placed on a chair by the door, along with a towel and some water. Warspite had even gone and removed the metal clasp around her hair, just tying her bright blond hair back into a singular ponytail to stop it falling forward.
It was strange to see her without the jacket, she had lost her more regal look and now had the look of just an average woman albeit a little on the shorter side. Well, apart from the fact she didn't wear much to cover her legs.
Eventually her movements slowed as her arms began trembling, the muscles unable to take her weight anymore. She stopped and rolled over onto her back, panting heavily. Her hand slowly rose and pointed towards the towel beside me.
“So, what's this about? Planning on throwing your shells at the Sirens next time we fight them?” I joked as I threw the towel over.
Warspite wiped the sweat away from her face. “Something like that.”
I picked up the water bottle and took a few steps towards her. “I’m curious though. Can you girls even physically change?”
“I think so.” She slowly stood up and took the offered drink before moving close and whispering. “Don’t tell a soul, but I've noticed the effects of her Majesty having one to many sweets and pastries.” Warspite made a slight pinching motion at her waistline.
“Seriously?” I chuckled, both amused and surprised at the knowledge.
She drank a mouthful of water and hummed in conformation. “It's barely noticeable, I only found out last night when she rolled over in bed.”
“That is an interesting development.” I mused while Warspite went and retrieved her clothes. “Still.” I continued. “Why were you exercising that hard anyway? I can’t see a reason for doing it to that level of intensity.”
She gave me a confused look. “What's wrong with exercise? I know for a fact you do it every day.” Her foot tapped against the deck. “My ship and everything.”
I folded my arms. “I don’t have cannons. If I get into a fight, my strength is all I have.”
“And me, I swore to be your sword after all.” She winked.
When I didn’t reply she sighed and finally relented. “Well, you know how we ended up at that port full of other ships. And how my body there had changed.” She looked over to see me nod before continuing. “You said that my body felt far stronger than normal, and that Union girl mentioned something about a retrofit. I thought about it all and realised when we were fighting those aircraft, I could feel myself getting worn out, despite the fact my human body wasn’t doing much, so maybe by becoming stronger with this body my ship will follow suit.”
I opened my mouth to point out the flaws in her logic, but held my tongue as I remembered that trying to find reason when it came to these girls was a nigh impossible task.
Warspite noticed my confused look. “I know it doesn’t make much sense. But it’s worth a shot. And if it ends up not working then oh well, at least I got a little stronger.”
“True.” I replied. “Anyway, it’s about midday. Want to go grab something to eat? Javelin’s probably made us all lunch by now.”
“Aye, can do. All this work has built up an appetite.” Warspite looked up towards the ceiling, fixing her hair. “I think they're setting up a table out on the deck. Let’s not keep them waiting.” She gestured for me to lead the way.

“So, how did you find me anyway? I had thought the stores would be out of the way.” Warspite asked as we made our way through the ship.
“I was just wandering around, then spotted the light and was curious. Why are you trying to keep it a secret?” I replied. I was still surprised I had stumbled upon her.
“Nay, it's nothing like that.” She waved a hand dismissively. “I did think about asking the other girls if they would be interested, but I realised it probably wouldn’t be their thing. That and I didn’t overly like the idea of others seeing me get all sweaty.”
“You seemed fine with me seeing you like that.”
Warspite cleared her throat with a cough. "T-true, but considering what we went through a few days ago and how you had to bandage me after the fight with that Siren I don’t think there's anything left I can feel embarrassed about when it comes to you.”
I noticed a slight blush had formed on her cheeks despite her speaking in a rather casual tone. My face also started to feel warm as her words brought back certain memories.
We were saved from any further embarrassment as the door leading to the outside came into view. I opened it and let Warspite walk through first.
It took a few seconds for my eyes to adjust to the brightness of the sun after spending so long inside the ship. I spotted Elizabeth further down the deck, organising a few plates and other items onto a table. Warspite’s face brightened just at the sight of her sister. Elizabeth noticed us as we walked over and waved. Once we were within earshot she spoke once we were within earshot.
“Good day James. One was just about to send someone to find you.” She gestured towards the table. “With how wonderful today is, one thought it best to have lunch outside today. The girls should be bringing it over shortly.” She pulled out a chair for herself but her face twitched in pain as a small injury she received on her arm from the battle reminded her of its existence.
Warspite immediately went over to her sister's side and pulled out the chair for her. “Your Majesty, you mustn't strain yourself. Your ship is still badly damaged.”
“As is everyone else’s. One can deal with a small inconvenience, one is a Dreadnought after all.” Elizabeth sat down and motioned for us to do the same. “And one's ship is nearly repaired, a day or two and it will be as good as new again.”
“That's good to hear.” I commented as I took my seat. “With your ship back in action that only leaves the Z23 in need of repair.”
“The poor little thing.” Elizabeth sighed. “One nearly lost composure upon seeing the damage wrought upon the small destroyer.”
The conversation ended as the sound of a door opening pulled our attention to Hood, Javelin and Z23 walking out onto deck, each of them carrying a tray of food.
I gave my thanks and helped serve the food out to everyone. It wasn’t anything overly fancy, as this time so long out at sea had made most of the fresher foods, being most dairy products and fruits had perished, leaving us with the basics, but it still looked filling and far better than anything I had eaten back on the Endurance; I didn’t know if this was due to it being prepared by caring hands or if it was due to me eating it with close friends instead of just eating alone back in my cabin.
At one point Elizabeth had stood and leaned forward to grab some bread. Warspite’s words about her sister's weight came back to me;I took a quick glance downward in shame. I wasn’t overly able to see much difference from when we had first met but when she sat down I noticed Warspite looking at me with a raised eyebrow while she drank some tea, her lips curled into a sly smile at either end of the mug.
“Anyone know where U-556 is?” I asked after drinking some tea and realising the small submarine wasn’t present.
“She is onboard one of the convoy ships.” Hood answered. “She's assisting in the repair of one of the freighters that got damaged below the waterline. She radioed in a few hours back and said she’d probably end up spending all day there.”
“That's good, any repairs done to the convoy can speed us up.” Z23 added after finishing a sandwich.
I nodded in agreement but I couldn’t help but feel worried. There shouldn’t be any danger, these girls are strong enough to break a man in to with ease. I told myself.
As if being summoned by the mention of her name, I heard a loud splash come from the ocean beside the ship followed by U-556 landing rather clumsily on the deck.
Panting heavily, she shook the water from her hair and noticed us. “Ah, Kommandant!” She called, still out of breath.
“What's wrong?” I was already out of my chair and running over, panic beginning to spread its way through my body.
“Ah, well. I have some amazing news to tell you!” Her hands were on her knees. She slowed her breathing before looking at me with her usual smile.
U-556 cleared her throat… and began speaking in rapid fire. “So, I was working on freeing up one of the cargo ship's rudders and while taking a short break I was talking to one of the sailors, I had noticed from how he spoke that he was from Germany and I was curious about my homeland. Pretty cool guy! He’s pretty handy with the welder and has this thick accent that is just lovely. Anyway! He asked if I wanted to have lunch back in his cabin. All the work had made me hungry so I accepted.”
“Right.” I said plainly, suspicious at what the sailor had intended.
“So, I was talking to him in his cabin and something caught my eye. Apparently during the battle, he had to abandon his old ship and he spotted them while on a lifeboat.”
Warspite walked into view, her arms folded. “What did he spot?”
It took U-556 a few seconds to realise she hadn’t shown what she was talking about. “Ah, right! He found these!” She dug her hands into her coat and pulled out two small cubes. Their soft blue glow immediately gave away what they were. “I remembered you showed me the ones you had. He was more than happy to let me have them.
“He just found the cubes floating out in the middle of the ocean?” I asked, surprised at their sudden appearance. U-556 just nodded and offered them to me. My hands grabbed them quickly. I could feel the same draw as before.
“Seems rather convenient.” Warspite voiced her concern.
“Yeah, but you know what they say about gift horses and whatnot.”
I looked at them intensely. Despite the pulling feeling I had there was nothing overly special about them.
U-556 tilted her head. “I thought if you touched them a ship would pop out. All the time I had them I just had an overwhelming feeling to get them to you.
“To be honest I have no idea how these things work. They just tend to sud- ah!” A sudden painful shock ran down my arm, making me involuntarily let go of them.
They hovered in the air a few feet off the deck. The cubes began to spin and a blinding glow started to radiate out from them. The brightness quickly grew to an intensity that forced me to turn my head away.
The light died down after a few seconds, I risked a quick look, and the sight I was greeted with was astonishing.
A tall girl now stood on the deck. She had fair pale skin and long brown hair that was tied in a ponytail to a side, held by a red feathered bun. She wore a short red dress that showed off her long legs and large chest. Her body and height were more akin to Hood’s than Javelin’s or Elizabeth's, but was far more athletic than the former. On her legs, she wore black socks with a red lining, as well as black leather bands on her thighs, and curious red high-heeled sandals on her feet with metallic wrappings around her soles and ankles. Another blue glow followed, and a long white jacket with intricate golden patterns materialised on her back. The long coattail and sleeves slowly fluttered in the wind. Looking closer, the ends resembled feathers.
Her eyelids fluttered before opening and revealing bright yellow eyes with a deep orange eyeshadow that seemed to instantly focus on me.
I raised a hand to wave in greeting, finally remembering that I existed. “Uh, hi. Things might be a little confusing for you right now but I can promise we can explain everything to y-”
She moved like lightning. Her hands dropped to her hip as a scabbard appeared. With a shout in a language I didn’t recognise, she leapt towards me unsheathing her thin sword in one fluid motion.
Even if I wasn’t frozen in shock there wouldn’t have been any chance for me to move. With her sword glinting in the sunlight, she swung towards me.
With a flash of sparks, her attack was stopped mere inches from my head as another sword blocked its path. Warspite quickly pushed the sword away from me and forced the girl to step back. “James get back! There's something wrong with her!” She yelled, getting ready for her next attack.
“But-”
Warspite didn’t even wait for my response and kicked her leg back to push me away. Even without the strength granted to her by her rigging there was enough force to push me several feet away, I was saved from hitting the deck as Z23’s small hands wrapped around me and put me back on my feet.
The girl in red attacked again. She pushed off her back foot and plunged directly towards Warspite. Even with the sheer weight and size of her sword Warspite easily stepped to the side and deflected the attack. There had been an opportunity for Warspite to follow up with an attack of her own but she used the opening to create distance between them instead.
“Kommandant, stay behind us!” Z23 sternly spoke as she moved to stand in front of me, her rigging out and ready.
I watched in shock as the new girl moved towards Warspite once again, this time with a constant flurry of blows. Each one was blocked with ease but I could see that Warspite was losing ground due to her not wishing to injure her. I caught a glimpse of the girl's face; it was now twisted into a look of pure anger. “What's wrong with her?”
“I believe she may be suffering from the same affliction that had gripped me.” Z23 coldly said. “She probably suffered a horrible sinking and believes she is still there.”
Elizabeth’s rigging appeared at my side, one of the turrets was positioned to protect me while the other was trained at the girl. “What can we do to help her?”
“I don’t know. It was the Kommandant who was able to pull me out from the abyss, but I don’t think that will work on her.” Z23 replied.
The girl in red was able to get past Warspite’s guard, slashing across her right arm, leaving a long cut that soon bled onto the deck. Warspite gritted her teeth to endure the pain and continued to step back.
Elizabeth looked panicked. “W-well, we have to do something! Warspite can't last too long fighting her!” She took a step forward, only for Hood to place her hand on her shoulder.
“Don’t worry, your Majesty.” Hood spoke in a calming voice. “Miss Warspite has already formed a plan.” Hood pointed towards one of the ship’s turrets. One of the barrels had started tilting down. I realised Warspite was backing up to put both her and the girl right at the end of the barrel. “Even without a shell the cordite should create a loud enough bang to startle her.”
Realising her plan, Elizabeth quickly turned and jumped towards me, her outstretched hands quickly cupping my ears as we fell to the deck.
There was a muffled bang followed by a shockwave that felt like my body had been hit by a train. The deck was quickly covered in smoke.
“Thanks.” I told Elizabeth as we stood back up. We both looked towards where the two had been as the smoke started to clear.
The girl in red was standing there, grasping her head with her free hand while she recovered from the shock. Her gaze cleared up somewhat, as she seemed to finally gather herself, as her eyes fell upon her own hand, and stared at it in confusion. Warspite then darted out from the smoke with a hand raised in a fist poised towards the confused girl, who only managed an ungainly “Eh?” Before Warspite’s punch made contact with her stomach and sent her flying Warspite snatched her sword, and rushed forward, stopping above the downed girl, and holding both blades a few inches above her head. Warspite couldn’t help but examine the curious single edged blade, and gave a slight of approval before returning her attention to the rattled shipgirl. “You know English?” Warspite asked.
“I… do?” She replied, confused at the sudden knowledge making itself known in her head.
Warspite smiled, and retired herself from her, examining the sword one last time before sheathing her own, and proceeded to offer the now free hand. “Sorry about all that. It was all I could think to do without injuring you.”
The girl blinked a few more times as she gathered herself, eventually taking Warspite’s hand and standing back up. She looked all over herself in amazement. “I’m… human? How is this possible?”
“We’re something far more than just a human.” Warspite reversed the grip on the blade and offered it back. “It’s rather confusing at first but you’ll get the hang of it.”
She noticed the cut on Warspite’s arm when she took her sword back. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to injure you.”
“Don’t worry about it, I needed the practice anyway.” She casually replied.
The girl noticed the rest of us watching the exchange, her face started to turn red in embarrassment. Warspite put a reassuring hand on her back. “Come, let’s go meet everyone.”
When she was close enough to me she suddenly bowed her head down. “I sincerely apologise for attacking you!”
I was slightly taken aback by the gesture, but I eventually smiled and waved a hand. “As Warspite said, there’s nothing to apologise about. It’s all water under the bridge now.”
“Warspite?” The girl spoke in a curious tone. She looked back at the ship we were standing on. “If this is the Warspite then you must be the Royal Navy.”
“Eh, kind of. It’s a rather long story.” I shrugged. “Allow me to introduce everyone. “To my left is Javelin, Hood and Queen Elizabeth of the Royal Navy. And to my right is Z23 and U-556 of Iron Blood” I pointed to the girls as I named them, they each gave a nod or a small wave in greeting.
“And my name is James.” I offered my hand to her.
She looked at my hand in confusion for a moment before grabbing it with both of her hands and shaking. “I am Zuikaku, the second ship of the Sakura empire’s Shokaku class aircraft carriers. I will be in your care.”
“A Sakura aircraft carrier?” I looked at her head, surprised at the absence of any fox ears, nor did she seem to have a tail. A quick look showed that Warspite was probably thinking the same thing.
“Is something wrong?” Zuikaku asked.
“Oh no it’s nothing, just a little curious as to why a Sakura ship is all the way out here in the Atlantic.” I quickly replied.
“That is a good question.” Zuikaku folded her arms and thought. “Last thing I can recall was being sent to the Philippine Sea to investigate the disappearance of an entire battle group. I was suddenly attacked by a swarm of siren torpedo and dive bombers and sunk shortly after.”
“Well, we still have no idea where the cubes come from, and there doesn’t seem to be any real correlation between where you sink and where your cubes are found.”
Zuikaku gave me a puzzled look. “Cubes?”
I sighed and looked over to the table. The chairs had been knocked over in the chaos and any food that was left would be inedible after being covered in the smoke from Warspite’s cannon.
“It may be best for you to take a set.” I spoke as I walked over to the table. “You're in for a rather long story.”

It took nearly three hours to explain to her nearly everything that had happened over the past few weeks. To my surprise she remained attentive and would occasionally ask a few questions about certain events.
Hood had gone and made tea for us, but even that hadn’t stopped my throat from feeling sore by the end.
“And that’s about everything.” I finished. “If I have to do this with every ship I meet it may be best for me to write all this down and just give it to them from now on.”
“Yes, that may be a good idea.” Zuikaku replied with a plain tone while she idly ran her finger around the rim or her teacup.
I had seen that look before. It was the look of someone realising everything their crew had fought and died for had been destroyed and forgotten. It was a sight I knew I would be seeing more often, but one I could never get used to.
Warspite offered some comfort. “I know it’s a lot to take in. Trust me I’m still getting to grips with everything myself. But know that you are far stronger than you once were and you will avenge your crew.”
Zuikaku nodded, with a bit more life in her motions. “You’re right, The gods have granted me a new body and the strength to strike down my foes. I will need some time to reflect upon what you have said, do you have a spare cabin that I could use?”
Warspite looked to me for approval, I just shrugged, it was her ship after all. She finished her tea and stood up. Come, I can give you a quick tour and find an empty cabin for you.”
Zuikaku stood and followed. About halfway across the deck she stopped and looked out to sea for a moment before turning back to me. “You said something about us having something called rigging. With your permission, I would like to try mine out.”
“By all means have a go, I’m curious as to how carrier rigging works myself.” I gestured to the open sea.
Turning back, Zuikaku closed her eyes and focused. Her hands returned to the sword on her hip. A large runway appeared next to her scabbard, which attached itself to her hip. Her red sandals glowed and grew long metal fins from the back of the heels.
Zuikaku drew her sword, now engulfed in flame. When she slashed, the flames grew and several balls of flame leapt out from the sword’s edge. They shot out at a blinding speed, each one growing and forming into the shape of an aeroplane before the flames evaporated and revealed a bright green fuselage.
Four aircraft flew out and away from the Warspite with roaring engines before turning and circling a few times. Zuikaku then sent them climbing up into their sky, the red spot on their wings glinting against the wide-open sky.
“Well, that was an interesting sight to behold.” I said in amazement.
Zuikaku opened her eyes and looked towards where they had gone. “It's a bit tricky to control, but I should be able to leave them up on a reconnaissance path for a while.” She sheathed her sword. “Well, until they run out of fuel that is. But it should help prevent another Siren fleet sneaking up on you.”
“Feel free to launch them whenever you want. If it stops the Sirens getting the drop on us then I'm more than happy.”
She turned and bowed, then made ways towards a now impatient looking Warspite.
Hood stood up with a giggle, and started making her way over to the bridge, looking at the disappearing planes. “The aircraft is probably causing all manner of panic across the convoy. I will go and reassure them that they are friendly.”
I waved Hood off and sat back in my chair and relaxed at the feeling of the warm sun. Unfortunately, it was short lived as a small hand was placed upon my shoulder.
“Come on, Kommandant. The sooner we get back to work, the sooner we will be done.” Z23 spoke encouragingly.
I sighed, feeling my shoulders sag. “Yeah, back to work we go.”
I walked back into the dark interior of the Warspite once again, to spend countless hours going over paperwork with Z23 and trying my hardest not to fall asleep.

Z23 let the hot shower water fall over her body with a relaxing sigh. She closed her eyes, and for a moment her entire world was filled with naught but the sound and feeling of the warm falling water.
Javelin’s chipper voice came from the next shower stall over. “So what do you think of the new girl? She seems nice.”
Z23 thought for a moment before replying. “Can’t really make a proper judgement of her yet. Haven't really spent much time with her.”
“Ah, fair enough. Being able to launch planes is really cool though! If she was with us a few days ago then those Siren aircraft would have been no problem at all.”
“J-ja.” Z23 quietly replied, a hand subconsciously moving to her back as Javelin’s comment brought back memories of the battle. She had checked beforehand that the bruising had disappeared before coming, but there was still an occasional twinge of pain whenever she moved.
Z23 had downplayed the damage her ship received. She remembered watching the bomb skipping across the water and slamming into her torpedo launcher. The shockwave had buckled her keel almost to the point of snapping it, and her spine had erupted in pain numbing her legs. Z23 had fallen to the cold metal of her bridge’s floor, and needed every ounce of willpower she had to stay conscious and keep her remaining guns firing.
She had fought against the temptation to use the radio. She knew that all it would take was a simple call for help and James would have come for her. She had even pictured it: The door to her bridge slamming open and James running through, he would pick her up in his arms and carry her to safety, somehow taking all the pain away.
Z23 grabbed the shampoo and started to wash her hair with a frustrated sigh, dismissing those fantasies. Just as she had decided back then, she knew those thoughts were irrational. The Kommandant had to remain focused on the battle at large, the last thing he needed was a weak Destroyer calling out for help.
Z23 had decided to keep her injury to herself, and had instead focused on getting the fires and flooding under control once feeling returned to her legs. She wouldn’t let the others worry and see her as nothing more than a weakling.
Z23 turned and let the hot water run down her back. The heat brought a temporary relief to her sore muscles.
She wondered if the Kommandant knew how to give massages. He had said his back felt sore after sitting all day, and she could just make up a story about how her back was also feeling sore. Knowing him he would be more than happy to offer a back massage.
Z23 once more drifted. She would lay down on bed, close her eyes and relax, as his hands slowly moved across her back, gently kneading out all the tension. By the time he was done she would be half asleep, he would lean in putting his face close to hers. And then, and then…
She caught herself and forcefully banished such thoughts. She quickly switched the showers temperature and let the cold water cool her hot head.
“Stupid dummkopf, you’re supposed to be a warship.” She chastised herself.
“Huh, you say something?” Javelin asked, reminding her she wasn’t alone.
“Oh uh, nothing! Just talking to myself.” Z23 quickly finished up and left the shower.
Just as she was about to grab a towel a pair of damp slender hands wrapped around her from behind. “It's really not fair.” Javelin whined. “I wish I was as big as you.” Javelin put her body weight into Z23 and rested her head on her shoulder. A jolt of pain ran down her spine, almost making her stumble and yelp, but was able to control herself.
Javelin for her part had already been suspicious of her the last few days. At first it was asking about Z23’s stiff walking and then why she had been bathing at separate times. Z23 meanwhile had almost confided in her what had happened but ultimately stopped herself. Javelin’s smile had been all she needed, she had decided.
“Javelin, if you haven't already noticed, you are already taller than me.” She was already used to the British Destroyer’s lack of understanding regarding personal boundaries, with how callous she and Hood had been when she fitted her pyjamas. She wondered if it was a Royal Navy thing.
“I didn’t mean height, I meant these!” Javelin's hands reached up and squeezed her chest, forcing a yelp in surprise from the blond destroyer. “If mine were as big as yours James would notice me more. He just seems to spend all his time with Warspite nowadays.”
Z23 opened her mouth to chew out Javelin for being so immature, but remembered what she herself had just been fantasising. Instead, she turned and put a hand on Javelin’s shoulder. “Javelin, believe me when I say that the Komm... James will always have time for you; you were his first ship after all. There is a special bond between you two that will never be broken. Besides.” A small smirk formed on her lips. “In terms of chest size, I think you already surpass the two Dreadnoughts.”
Javelin nodded with a sigh. “You're right, I need to stop worrying so much. Thanks Zee, I knew I could trust you to help me see sense. You really are like a wise old friend.”
“Don't you start acting coy.” Her hands went to her hips as she started to giggle. “You're only a year younger than me.”
The two destroyers shared a laugh together, unaware of a third person entering the washroom.
“Um, excuse me.” Zuikaku asked, slightly shocked at the two girls just standing in the open without any sort of covering. Was it some sort of western thing? She thought to herself while tightening the grip on her towel. “I was told to come here to bathe. Does the Shikikan share this space with us?” Z23 noticed the carrier's eyes drift downward. Her ears started to burn as she realised Zuikaku had probably overheard what the two had just been talking about.
“He does, but not at this time.” Z23 replied while grabbing a towel for Javelin and herself. “He tends to wash up after us or first thing in the morning. And I'm sure if this place was still occupied, he would just come back later.”
“That’s a relief.” Zuikaku relaxed. “Thank you.”
The two Destroyers then proceeded to inform Zuikaku where to find everything around the washroom. The Sakura carrier was attentive all the while, though she also still seemed out of it, probably due to still coming to terms with the fact that she could even bathe in the first place. Javelin excused herself first with a cheerful bow, and just as Z23 was about to follow her out the door, Zuikaku called out to her.
“Um. About the Shikikan, what type of man is he?”
Z23 paused for a moment before answering. “The Kommandant is... As green as they come, he is completely inexperienced and has next to no idea what he’s doing.” Her face felt warm and she smiled softly. “But he’s earnest in his shortcomings and is always open to listen. He wishes for nothing but the best for us and has put himself in mortal danger for our wellbeing several times over now. I believe all the girls in the fleet would agree in saying you would be hard pressed to find a man more worthy to command us than him. That’s the type of man James is.”
“Oh, I see.” Zuikaku looked surprised at the heartfelt reply, eyes drifting off as she thought over the words. Even Z23 was taken off guard by her own words. “Once again, thank you. You’ve given me much to think about.”
Bidding her a good night, the German destroyer left smiling with a slight spring in her step.
“Maybe one day a massage wouldn’t be such a bad idea.” She said to herself.

new road in Nagorno Karabakh is expected to cut distance between capital Stepanakert and Martakert by 20 kilometers

The new Stepanakert-Martakert road will pass through the village Chankatagh instead of Drmbon. Today, if you want to travel from the northeast (Martakert) to the south (Stepanakert), you need to reach all the way west (Drmbon). The new road is a diagonal connection (via Chankatagh).
This is the largest road project in Artsakh since the war. The asphalt is ready, they are working on signs and barriers. Himnadram.org is financing the construction (which means donors like you).

interview with military expert Col. Artsrun Hovhannisyan

Reporter: You always sat that we must analyze what type of war we will fight in the future, and only then build an army suited for that type of warfare. Is this what's being done today?
Artsrun: I left the system a year ago so I don't know all the inner workings, so I don't know if that's what's being done.
I do see many positive developments, such as an increased defense budget and certain appointments. I know many of the appointees, and I know they are the right pick.
Education is still not ideal but it has undergone reforms. I have received information that one of the departments is being fully transformed. I cannot mention more.
So yes, there are many positive changes inside Defense Ministry. It makes me very happy. But since I don't know everything, I don't know if they have a clear doctrine on where we are headed. This should have been done after the 1st Karabakh war.
Reporter: Why wasn't it done then? Did we believe there wouldn't be another war?
Artsrun: For political and economic reasons. I don't know, maybe we considered ourselves as the "victorious army" and slept on a pillow. Or maybe we thought Russia would help prevent a war. I don't know.
Reporter: You are an army specialist who officially serves as an adviser to a relevant parliamentary committee. Today we hear a lot about army reforms. Have you not seen any discussions around the comprehensive doctrine that you say is a prerequisite?
Artsrun: No. But that's something they don't have to bring to Parliament. It's a document that CoGS has to develop. CoGS could discuss it with the Security Council, and possibly the Government, but not necessarily Parliament.
Certain parts deriving from that document will, eventually, enter Parliament. For example, I've mentioned that certain reform proposals make me happy. We are switching from less frequent 90-day to more frequent 25-day reservist retraining, and contractor salaries will double if they pass certification. These are all entering Parliament separately.
Defense Ministry has set certain requirements for this certification. I wanted the requirements to be even stricter, but it's okay, this is not bad. A stricter approach is the right approach, it will lead to better quality. There is plenty of room for improvement, though.
Reporter: Why is there plenty of room for improvement, why do we have shortcomings, isn't the army command motivated to improve the army?
Artsrun: It's a problem with a lack of knowledge and the school they graduated from. Perhaps the majority of decision-makers are too old today. They live in a different time, with different standards. Times change, but the stack of documents does not.
Why does the army pay ֏50,000 for a ֏5,000 shovel? I'm not talking about corruption schemes. It sounds absurd, right? It's a result of using a 19th-century army structure.
We know that in the 21st century you will fight the battles at night, so why are we still holding most of the training exercises during the daytime, with motionless targets? We are doing everything wrong: train during the daytime, shoot while lying, shoot 9 bullets only, and shoot at a still target.
Reporter: About weapons from India...
Artsrun: [takes out his cock]. Another fantastic direction is South Korea. I've also spoken about Swedish weapons, etc. India is a great direction. Better late than never. What I like about Defense Ministry's visit was the participation in the defense expo and the meetings with private companies.
We have a lot to discuss regarding our domestic defense industry and its shortcomings. It has fantastic projects but lacks the correct strategy. That is why today, we must import as many weapons as possible, and worry about our domestic industry only in the medium-long term (2+ years). It's a topic for another day.
India is rearming its own army at a massive scale. You know they have a large army. People often ask why we buy Indian weapons that haven't been acquired [and tested] by others. They haven't been acquired by others not because they are bad, but because [of supply shortages]. They are modernizing faster than they produce. This is why exports are small. This is true for China as well; they've become a major exporter only 4-5 years ago.
Reporter: Armenian drone manufacturers present their UAVs and claim it's ready for mass production. Is this a myth?
Artsrun: If I answer honestly, I will slightly harm our manufacturers and the state. I will say the following. We have legal and organizational problems and too much bureaucracy in the military industry inherited from USSR.
Then we have 3-5 drone manufacturers, with great achievements, that simply refuse to cooperate with one another. It's a pointless competition.
Reporter: How can they compete if they don't have a market?
Artsrun: It's a mess that needs a solution and better financing/treatment from the state. There is also an issue with access to Western components. So, we cannot rely on domestic producers. We must import lots of drones right now. If we can purchase a few hundred drones from abroad within the next several months, that would be great.
There are local manufacturers that have the cash but need other forms of assistance from the state. Within 1-2 years, we can help these companies deliver serious products if we work on it.
Reporter: What about the shortage of Western components?
Artsrun: I won't say much but the ongoing geopolitical changes and the West's changing attitude towards Armenia can open up new opportunities. We can have results if we work hard.
Reporter: There are complaints about the lack of significant engineering work in trenches, and that most of the deaths are a result of this. We don't have blindazh, etc.
Artsrun: Those who claim there haven't been significant engineering efforts are, to put it mildly, lying. The area where we were deployed, and this is a brand new frontline formed after the 2020 war, has seen a massive amount of engineering work.
It will never be enough, though. If they bring you 5 tractors, you will ask for 10. If they bring 10, you will ask for 20. You can always find areas of improvement, new roads, trench modifications, and deeper holes.
What the critics should have criticized is the type of trenches we are building. We need a trench model that protects against drone strikes.
Reporter: But you are expecting non-experts to understand all that.
Artsrun: Then why are these non-experts so convinced about their knowledge of engineering work? It's okay if they criticize without understanding. What's not okay is the agenda-driven criticism to form a certain trend.
Reporter: Should our soldiers actually be in those trenches, or it's time for us to get out?
Artsrun: Stay there for now, but change their design. You are going to get struck from above, while your tench is designed to protect you from horizontal fire.
Reporter: Deputy mayor Tigran Avinyan recently stated that our soldiers were a lot more prepared in September 2022 than during the "bardak" of the 2020 war. Is this true?
Artsrun: It is true that soldiers were significantly more prepared. They have become more vigilant, they act more carefully after learning from 2020 mistakes. The decentralized command has become very trendy in our army, but we need serious work to institutionalize it. Today, our soldiers are fighting in a way that's not written in the "books" yet. It should be the opposite. We must develop our school.

ruling party MP accuses Russia of conspiring with Azerbaijan to extort a "corridor" from Armenia

Reporter: Is it possible to sign the AM-AZ peace treaty this year?
QP MP Gagik Melkonyan: That's the goal encouraged by superpowers. Whether it will happen or not depends on Ilham Aliyev, but judging by his behavior, it's unlikely to happen this year.
Reporter: Putin has invited Aliyev and Pashinyan. What are your expectations?
Melkonyan: Nothing good. I'm not even sure if it will take place. The king of Russia could have organized it during the recent Astana forum.
Reporter: Why do you dislike the idea of holding a meeting in Moscow?
Melkonyan: Because Aliyev becomes unhinged in Russian platforms, and behaves properly in Western platforms. Moscow enables him.
Reporter: Are you suggesting Russia is showing favoritism towards Azerbaijan?
Melkonyan: Have you not been paying attention? Yes.
Reporter: Is the West "pressuring" Armenia? [Context: Russia's foreign ministry suggested that the West is using NGOs to pressure Armenia to become anti-Russia and to harm AM-RU relations.]
Melkonyan: I have not seen any "pressure". It is Russia that has set a goal of obtaining a joint "corridor" with Azerbaijan. //
Kocharyan's faction leader Seyran Ohanyan criticized Pashinyan instead when asked to comment on Russia's refusal to assist Armenia.
Ohanian: Why did Pashinyan even ask CSTO for help without first declaring martial law in Armenia and using the domestic resources to the fullest extent? He only screams for help. //

Armenia denies entry to Russian parliament MP Zatulin for public comments "against Armenia"

Konstantin Zatulin, a friend of pro-Russian ex-president Robert Kocharyan, gave an interview to ARF's media outlet last week. I covered his points in October 17 digest.
He suggested that Armenia is not being a "good ally" to Russia, he wanted Armenia to be thankful that Russia hasn't asked Armenia for military support in Ukraine, he suggested that Armenians were being genenrally ungrateful, and he was critical of Armenia's efforts to build closer ties with the West. He also suggested that Armenia owes a "corridor" to Azerbaijan.
The Armenian parliament has informed Zatulin that he is no longer allowed to enter Armenia for "statements that damage the development of friendly and allied relations between [Armenia and Russia]."
Zatulin called the entry ban "insulting" and "unexpected". According to him, he had plans to visit Jermuk to learn about the damage caused by Azerbaijan to civilian infrastructure. Now he might not be able to visit.
In related news. The government is preparing a bill to criminalize any violent action or statements aimed against Armenia's sovereignty. Advocating for Armenia to become part of Russia could land you in prison. Robert Kocharyan and Ruben Vardanyan recently found themselves at receiving the end of criticism for comments about "Russian Union" and "Tatarstan".

... RT's Margarita Simonyan is also banned from entering Armenia

Margo: Константину Затулину, много лет яростно поддерживающему Армению, нынешний начальник Армении запретил въезд в Армению. Мне, кстати, тоже. Красаучик жи есть, что тут еще скажешь. [Nikol banned me.]

U.S. has no comments on Iran's recent military exercises on the Azerbaijan border

Context: Iran held military exercises on the border while warning Azerbaijan against any attempts to forcefully open a "corridor" via Armenia. The U.S. has also called on Azerbaijan to withdraw its troops from occupied territories of Armenia, and to refrain from using force.
Question: Azerbaijan is concerned about the military exercises held by Iran on their border. Comment?
Ned Price: No particular comment. We want to see a stable Caucasus region, where we work both with Armenia and Azerbaijan to de-escalate border tensions.

We also discussed the statement made by the Speaker of the House, in which he stated that Canada, as a democratic state, must support democratic Armenia in the defense of its territorial integrity and sovereignty, so that Canada won't face similar problems tomorrow.
We appreciate the decision to open a Canadian embassy in Armenia. Our Canadian colleague informed us that it is a sign of support for Armenian democracy. //

Azerbaijani officials are concerned about sanctions and embargo by France and EU, as a response to their September aggression against Armenia

Several Azeri MPs and public figures are unhappy about a pro-Armenian resolution that the French Senate plans to discuss next month. They are concerned about sanctions and defense assistance to Armenia.
Concerned Azeri officials: This resolution will also call upon every EU country to suspend the import of oil and gas from Azerbaijan. It will require certain rights for Armenians in Karabakh, things related to Armenian cultural heritage and Lachin corridor. The resolution will pave way for military assistance to Armenia.
We have launched a petition against this resolution. Baku should also review possible sanctions against Paris. Boycott products made in France. //

Another meeting will be held soon to discuss it. They have not yet decided when and where.
Turkish media writes that the traffic between AM-TR amounted to 40,000 tons of goods and 140,000 passengers despite the direct border being closed, and that these numbers can increase tenfold if the border opens.

Mirzoyan thanked the Pope for raising Grigor Narekatsi to the rank of Doctor of the Church, and Pope's principled position on the Armenian genocide.

Georgia-U.S. relations (not so good)

October 4 news digest has the context. Georgia's ruling party is split into "Russia-friendly" and "anti-Russia" deputies. The Georgian government, headed by the "Georgian Dream" party, is criticized by Ukraine and some in the West for being too pro-Russia.
Question: Are you aware of the new list of sanctions assigned by Zelenski targeting the inner circle of the Georgian oligarch Ivanishvili who has been in charge for 10 years? Have you had any consultations with Ukrainians?
U.S. State Department: We remain committed to working with Georgia’s Government as it undertakes the EU-suggested reforms. We want to work with Georgia on its broader European aspirations.
Question: We've spent millions for decades to help Georgia become a strong democracy. How concerned are you about their apparent drift toward Russian orbit? When Georgian MPs attacked the U.S. ambassador, you had to defend your ambassador, which is unprecedented for the 30 years of diplomatic relations. And when you look at the MPs of the ruling parties who are talking about the supposed plot by the U.S. to drag Georgia into a new war with Russia, how concerned are you when you see those events and statements?
U.S. State Department: We are concerned. We’ve voiced our concern about some of the government's actions. The government's actions, including moving backward on important democratic reforms, have created setbacks. These actions have also deepened polarization within Georgian society rather than unifying the country around the core issues of Euro-Atlantic integration. We still remain committed to working with Georgia to make the reforms needed to meet its Euro-Atlantic goals.

education & universities

QP MP Babken Tunyan: Education's share in the budget (2.7%) is small and there are opinions that it's necessary to increase it, but on the other hand there are concerns that if we were to increase the budget by 50% today, they simply wouldn't know how to spend it.
Education Ministry: That is true for certain areas, but our general 2021-2026 educational program is broad enough to absorb those resources. We plan to rebuild hundreds of facilities, labs in thousands, and retrain the teachers.
QP MP Tunyan: Regarding university mergers. I wasn't aware that most of our famous universities, which we consider "advanced", are not even in the list of top-10,000 best universities. We've long spoken about the need for education reforms. What are your plans in this area?
Education Ministry: Don't expect any success stories if the focus is only on universities. This is why we have adopted a policy of reforming the entire chain, from preschool to university. Our goal is to have 4 universities on the list of top-500 by 2030. It will be discussed in parliament soon.
QP MP Hovik Aghazaryan: I've been researching this for two years now. The road traffic is considerably better during school breaks because parents aren't double and triple parking. Perhaps it's time to provide school buses?
