Tried my hand at creating an easily digestible answer to the question, "why should I invest in GameStop?" for someone who doesn't fully understand the stock market. I know there are a few of these, but I feel like most miss the balance between too much, too little, and too in-depth information.
GameStop stock is highly speculated (and significantly evidenced) to be the subject of illegal (naked) short selling. Illegal ‘naked’ short selling means that Market Makers (the institutions who create options) create synthetic (counterfeit) shares to provide additional leverage on a stocks valuation without having to purchase the stock from the market, in example turning a single purchased short position into three short positions. These synthetic (counterfeit) shares are then mixed with the actual shares and purchased by brokerages via investors who purchase the stock, making the synthetic (counterfeit) position ‘real’. To combat this, hundreds of thousands of individual activist investors who care about the company have been Direct Registering shares via Computershare (GameStop’s transfer agent, non-custodian). Direct Registering shares removes the shares from the respective brokerages and places the shares directly into the investors name. Brokers typically hold investor purchased shares in pools that are allocated to investors in ‘street name’ (the investor’s account states they own the share), but the shares are actively pooled under the brokerages name. In that environment, a brokerage is allowed to lend those shares for shorting purposes. The consensus is that once GameStop shares are 100% direct registered, any GameStop volume/trading on the exchanges will be considered fraudulent, thus proving the thesis, and legally forcing a close on all short positions. Currently, GameStop stock is 57%+ Direct Registered and growing. Several independent studies have been done, with the most conservative outcome suggesting that GameStop has 5x as many shares in circulation as should be issued. Other studies suggest it’s potentially 20x. What this means is that Market Makers, banking institutions, brokerages, and anyone with a short position will have to purchase the shares via the exchange 5x over (conservatively) in order to close their short positions. If no one sells (and even if they do), demand to purchase the shares will increase and thus the value of the stock increases until all short positions are closed and the stock is reset 1:1. This is the idea behind the Mother of All Short Squeezes (MOASS). If you're interested in researching more for yourself, check out superstonk Additional context if responding to someone interested that likes reading (originally paragraphs 3 & 4): This actively works against the investor who purchases any stock, as purchasing stock results in a positive or increase to stock valuation and shorted shares are a negative or decrease to stock valuation. By creating synthetic (counterfeit) shares, brokerages actively have more ‘real’ shares to lend which allows for more ‘legitimate’ short positions than should be possible, which can then be synthesized (counterfeited) further. By Direct Registering GameStop shares, investors actively remove those shares from the brokerage pools and transfer them to Computershare who in turn places the shares into the investors name directly. GameStop stock is currently 57%+ Direct Registered by activist investors who have been creating awareness of the issue over the past two years. Mathematically, the shares-owned to shares-shorted should always be relative on a % basis, so why does the illegal shorting result in the declining of a stock’s value if investors are actively purchasing the synthetic (counterfeit) shares? Market Makers have a tool available aptly called a ‘dark pool’. Dark pools were created to negate a stocks valuation adjustment for institutions purchasing millions of dollars of stock in a block purchase, thus the value of the stock wouldn’t erupt over a high volume of purchases. Unfortunately, there is little to no transparency documented for dark pools, and the same Market Makers who create the illegal synthetic (counterfeit) shares are routing regular every-day stock purchases through the dark pools. This means that regular investors purchasing the stock doesn’t positively affect the price, allowing the stocks valuation to decline.
