The Problem Player Who Couldn't--Wouldn't--Do Anything
I've been honestly watching a lot of these stories from DnDoge, Crispy, Drake, CritCrab etc., and I thought in doing so, I would've had the NAW-lidge and WIS-dumb to understand what to look out for in a problem player and deal with it accordingly, which is why even now I'm a little confused, shocked, and above all annoyed beyond belief that I had found a game with a guy who didn't do anything...and that was the issue. This is going to be a long one so strap in, I guess. The Setup: I had been in and out of Pokemon Tabletop United campaigns for years trying to join as a player, only for each game to fizzle out because of GM burnout, or players just not getting along, or on very rare occasions (see my other story on that) leaving myself because of the game itself. That is until I found one group who was looking for a GM and an extra player, which I happily filled in the player role as I joined at the same time as our now-current GM, setting the group up with 1 GM, 3 players. GM was going through scheduling issues and other unrelated struggles for a few months before we were actually able to start the game, and with the game being pushed back repeatedly, one of the players eventually left, leaving us down to me, and one other player, whom I will call "Kris". Kris fortunately had a Plan B, and quickly made plans to invite his personal IRL friend to the discord, whom I will dub "Ostrich," after his attempts to deflect and ignore all of his problems and stressors by either metaphorically ragdolling onto the ground and shutting down, or burying his head in sand and ignoring everything. Again, to be fair, considering the many horror stories I've read on this site, Ostrich was not the worst player I've ever read about...but in my own personal experience, he was in fact one of the worst players I've had the experience of sharing a table with, and sometimes that is enough. So our cast and the characters therein are as follows (Might not be important, but I'll mark it down anyways, just in case): Me - A ninja girl from Kanto, initially hides her identity and abilities behind a pedestrian outfit and southern drawl while trying to look for her missing older brother. Started with a Zorua. Kris - A seer boy from Hoenn who can talk to pokemon and see past/present/future events. Started with a Hatenna. Ostrich - A normal backpacker with a scottich accent from the Galar region named Quinn. Started with a Gligar Right away, from character creation, Ostrich was showing signs of being a bit behind on things. Firstly, he could not choose for himself what he wanted with his character, couldn't decide what feats/classes he wanted his character to have/be, and didn't even really have a backstory for his character. All of this can kind of be excused, since sometimes a player just wants to make a character who shows up ready for adventure and goes with the flow, and needs a little extra help being decisive on what to really settle on. Also, I handed my GM an entire page of backstory (which I guess you could call a red flag on its own depending on your preference as a DM, but GM was cool with it), and Kris gave half a page's worth, so I had no right to say "Why don't you have a backstory!?" while my GM is jokingly responding to mine with "TL;DR" gifs. But what WAS hard to overlook, but ultimately let go of because none of us caught it in time, was the fact that Ostrich started with a Gligar as a starter pokemon. This is an issue because of Base Stat Count. In PTU, pokemon have an array of their stats (HP, ATK, SPATK etc) that is, basically, a fixed value of what your pokemon's stats are like at lvl 1. If the total sum of those stats is less than 45, that pokemon is considered an "Underdog" and any pokemon that is considered an Underdog is viable as a starter pokemon. For reference, Zorua and Hatenna have a base stat total of 34 and 27 respectively, so they are Underdogs. Gligar has a Base Stat Total of 46. It is not an Underdog. This oversight on Ostrich's part was only one symptom of an underlying problem: Ostrich did not read the rulebooks. He refused to read the rulebooks when told or reminded to, and if he ever did, he would forget what he was recommended to remember by the time next session rolled around. Speaking as a fellow player who spent literally weeks reading through all of the material when I first heard about it, I can understand the rules for PTU are expansive, as in "literally thousands of pages across the main books and the 2-3 recommended errata books" expansive. It isn't always easy to find the info you need on hand. Knowing this, I initially was always willing to explain to him how mechanics worked in and out of battles, which dice were rolled, and what moves did in the ttrpg game VS how they function in the video games; as well as which page/general section he can find it. I did this with the understanding that he would keep that in mind and be able to learn and recall that info. That's where I was wrong because... Strike 1: He Never Learns. The huge problem with Ostrich is that he refused to adapt for the sake of the group. When asked to read the rulebooks so he could better understand his options in and out of combat, he would say he will, but then return the next day knowing nothing. On a number of occasions, he will say "I don't know what else I can do on my turn/in this situation, so I do nothing", we tell him "You have X feat that can help you out of this." He will say "Oh wait...yeah...oh, I have this? What does this do?" And get us to explain the functions of the feat that he chose to pick and add to his character sheet. In an effort to get him to remember his feats so he would stop using the excuse of "Sure you know I have a shit memory and fuck me if I hardly even remember what my own shit does let alone everyone else’s" (something that he did actually say to us), I screencapped the pages in the 1000+ page rulebooks that held the features he took, posted them in chat, highlighted them, posted the screencaps in chat, and asked him to download them so he can see them on his phone when he needs them. I told him specifically "Ostrich, you have to be the master and expert on all the abilities and spells and feats you take and own in any game you're in. Not your GM. If you decide on your own feats, you need to know what they are, how they work, and possibly how you can apply and synergize them, front to back AND inside-out. Not just for your fellows' benefit, but specifically for your own." And yet he only ever gave excuses as to why he could not improve because he is "not book smart" and only "learns by repetition," and as a result, 1 month into the game, he still doesn't know what a swift action or shift action is. A Shift action is your movement. 3 months into the campaign, we have had to sit down with him and level up his character for him because he doesn't know how to do it himself. 4 months, he is asking how intercept maneuvers (taking a blow for your fellow teammate) works. He has seen both me and Kris use intercepts multiple times by now. 5 months, I take 2-3 hours of time out of my day being unemployed to help him recreate his character sheet off of Roll20, in google docs, using a pre-made template that conveniently calculates a shitton of information for the player and can even export its information back into roll20 so the player can punch the numbers in and import in 5 seconds as long as he keeps it up to date. I did this because we repeatedly kept hearing him say he doesn't know what his stats are because he cannot pull up his sheet on Roll20 from his phone, so I guide him through the process of setting up his google sheets charsheet step by step so he can pull it up on the fly on his phone anytime. Not only does he never thereafter update this google sheet I spent 3 hours helping him make, but he forgets it even existed. 6 months into the game, Ostrich is discussing how he wants to consider taking feats to make his character a pokemon whisperer, for example, taking Channeler, a class that lets you communicate intentions and emotions to pokemon. Kris's character is literally a Channeler. He has 1 or 2 feats in Channeler at this point. Ostrich just forgot what his fellow players' classes are. Needless to say, Kris was mad about that, as he himself picked these classes to stand out more as someone with a special affinity with pokemon, and Ostrich was obviously forgetting/ignoring that part. 8 months, he forgets how Base Stat Totals and Base Stat Relations work, ignoring them to stat a Liepard of his in such a way where she became a powerhouse who could take a ton of damage, not being the glass cannon the liepard's base stat relations say she would be. GM found out about this during a session where my PC was about to get kidnapped by the gang members who were looking for my PC's older brother, and were trying to kidnap me to use as leverage against him. I almost got knocked down to 0 HP and captured, but because of Ostrich's Liepard, he held the line and I was able to hotfoot it to safety. Specifically because of the fact Ostrich didn't stat his pokemon correctly, it's called into question whether or not my character would have made it out safe and sound if Ostrich didn't effectively cheat. When asked about why is Base Stat Relations were so out of wack, he simply said "I didn't know about that." 10 months into the game, Ostrich has his Munchlax use Lick on an Eevee. He commands his pokemon to use a Ghost-Type move on a Normal-Type pokemon. This was not a mistake made to enhance RP, he was trying to go for a paralysis effect, and forgot that Ghost Moves are made null by Normal Types. You might be saying "Okay sweaty, but not everybody can memorize EVs, IVs and type charts like a smogon nerd!" And I can respect that thought. The problem is, Ostrich himself has claimed that he battles competitively in the video games,and also has done countless nuzlocke runs (something I have yet to try even once because I myself don't have the willpower or knowhow to do so.) If Ostrich is willing to claim that he knows enough about the inner workings of Pokemon to be able to play nuzlockes and battle competitively, he should know that you can't use ghost moves on normal types. A common mistake for beginners. But Ostrich was not a beginner. The very next session after that, we get into an encounter where we are accosted by a swarm of Joltiks. Kris and just recently traded a fossil for an Alolan Vulpix, a feat we spent literal out of game months to accomplish so he could get a new pokemon, and Kris was so excited about being able to have his newly caught pokemon engage in a battle he thought would be an easy win for it, and thus its first victory. A few turns pass, the Joltiks roll a crit on an AoE Electric type move that targets my Zorua, and his Vulpix. My ninja character intercepts for her own Zorua, so as not to let it get too hurt. Kris's PC cannot feasibly take the crit and stay conscious. Ostrich, however, has his Gligar--a Ground-Flying pokemon that is immune to Electric moves--out on the field and within range to intercept, like I just did in front of his eyes. We try to suggest he does without overtly saying "Throw yourself in front of the bullet for your friend!" He does not intercept for Kris's Vulpix. The Vulpix takes a one-hit-KO and faints. When I asked why he didn't intercept for his fellow player, Ostrich says "I didn't know I could. I didn't think about doing it." Me: "Dude, you just saw me do it right in front of you!" Ostrich: "Well, I also thought Gligar would've been one-shot instead of Vulpix anyway if I did. It's a Flying Type." Kris: "It's also a Ground Type," Me: "Yeah, dude, that means it's immune to Electric Moves." Ostrich: "Oh. I didn't know that." Me: "Gligar is your starter pokemon that you've had for 10 months! How do you not know that?!" Ostrich: *says nothing* Me: "This is why I made that google docs sheet for you, it literally has type effectiveness charts built-in that updates based on the pokemon you're using, and you didn't use it. We're past the tutorial phase at this point, my dude." Needless to say, Kris has checked out the entire rest of that encounter. Even I was upset for him. All of this to say, Ostrich could not learn anything. But more than just being almost incompetent in combat situations to the point of always asking us what he should be doing with his character like a Persona 3 teammate, he also struggled with playing his character out of combat. Strike 2: When He Roleplays, He's Either a Background Character or a Sociopath. Remember how I said he never knew what he wanted his Galar character to be? I didn't just mean that in terms of how he wanted to stat out his character (which we helped stat out for him over the course of 5 hours,) but also in the sense that Ostrich never took into consideration what his PC's likes, dislikes, personality, desires, motivations and ideals were. Ostrich rarely, if ever, played as Quinn the Backpacker from Galar. Ostrich frequently, if not always, played himself, just with an added scottish accent and high stats in Charm and Command, two of the game's charisma-like skill stats that he only ever had a basic smooth-brained surface-level understanding of how they worked. Because his character had a high Command stat, he thought it meant he could--you know--COMMAND people and pokemon to do things at his request, basically treating his charisma-based stat like the Command spell in DnD...in a pokemon game. In his defense, the game does say that Command is a stat that allows you to try issuing orders to wild/disobedient pokemon when they otherwise would not listen to you, but he thought he could extrapolate that further, and in doing so, this led to him trying things like "I roll command on the scared pokemon to get them to stop running." or "I'll roll my command to tell the angry wild pokemon grappling Kris to drop him and go away." or "I can try to roll Command to command the thief who pickpocketed us to drop the item he stole." We kept having to remind him on a monthly basis that Command is not about trying to mind-control someone to do your bidding like an enchantment wizard, that it is mainly a stat that reflects a person's aura of leadership and capacity to garner respect from others. He kept forgetting this part. When it came to Charm rolls, Ostrich liked redheads. Ostrich regularly tried to roll a charm check to flirt with red-headed girls, to varying degrees of success. Ostrich specifically took a feat that allowed advantage on charm checks with a single specific specialization, and he specified that the advantage would go towards flirting with redheads. And yes, it was in fact that specific. He eventually rolled to flirt with a redhead whom he then proceeded to spend the night in a tent with. Don't worry, nothing sexual happened, so no fade to black occurred. BUT, the redhead NPC became infatuated (no, not the status condition) with Ostrich's PC, and they essentially became a couple. So what does Ostrich then do with this? He gets her phone number, only for HER to send him numerous texts trying to talk to him, and him to barely, minimally communicate with her, answering "K" in his texts back to her. We later met another New Redhead with bigger boobs than his current girlfriend, so he rolled charm to flirt with her(again, with redhead advantage), succeeded, but got a response from said redhead saying "sorry, I'm flattered, but I'm already in a relationship" with Ostrich saying "We can change that." Kris and I, both in-game and out, were definitely appalled. My character warns his him that he can do what he wants, but that if he does anything skeevy to hurt Old Redhead's feelings, he'll hear about it from my character and she will not let him live it down. I should say that Kris and I as well were not averse to having romantic B-plots for own characters. Kris ended up stumbling into and successfully developing a relationship with an NPC who uses hydrokinesis and water pokemon. Meanwhile, my character is having a conflict-filled romance with a guy who looks like the Unovan version of Ash Ketchum, has a Litten for a starter and developed a crush on my character because he thinks she's pretty. And while my character has been throwing him mixed signals, it's mostly to keep him at arm's length as a friend, because of being guarded, not wanting him to get hurt by criminals as a result of associating himself with her, etc. And that stuff is fun to roleplay. Ostrich does not want the roleplay of romantic relationships. He just wants to flirt with fictional women without the effort or the consequences, and then skip to the erotic part, like in a dating sim. The first NPC he hooked up with would eventually invite all three of us to a Red Riding Hood play, wherein she was to play the role of the big bad Lycanroc. We all thought that would be a good excuse to go to Virbank, especially to see Quinn's girlfriend NPC. Meanwhile, Ostrich thought it would be a great idea to go so that his character Quinn can tell her that he plans to break up with her because he met New Redhead who is hotter than her. Kris and I, again, were appalled by these actions and voiced our concerns. Me: "Okay, so...how do you plan on going about this? We just show up to her play and you say 'yeah, we're not dating anymore, bye"? Ostrich: "I figured telling her face to face would be the honest thing to do. That's why we're going to Virbank to watch her play first instead of me calling her to tell her." Kris: "Soooo you wanna go all the way to Virbank, watch her in a play, THEN be all "hey so we ain't gonna be dating anymore. I met this other girl, and she has a boyfriend right now, but im gonna change that"??? That's sociopathic." More on that later. On another occasion, our characters get on a bus shortly after the scene where my character almost got kidnapped, as we decided to flee Nimbasa City to head out to Nacrene further in the sticks. On the bus, Ostrich notices a Bulbasaur on the bus, and follows it to its trainer, a woman NPC with burn scars on her right arm who is sitting in the back of the bus. Because she was brunette and not a redhead he didnt roll Charm to flirt with her, but he does try to strike up a friendly conversation with this woman, thinking maybe she might trade her bulbasaur. Ostrich: "I go up to her with a smile and say "I'm sorry if I am botherin ya or anythin, but I just had to come an tell ye that I jus adore your Bulbasaur." DM describes this womans appearance, her skin color, hair color, facial and hair features, as well as the fact that she has burn scars before saying how she gives a smile back at Ostrich's character. NPC: "Thank you! Isn't he just the cutest? His name is Bud." Ostrich: "Aye he is. I hope I wasn't botherin you or anything. I can't wait tah have one of me own some day. By the way, if ya don mind me askin, where did you get that burn on your hand? I've got em too." GM says her smile instantly fades before she begins to hide her scarred hand, saying "I'd...rather not talk about it." Ostrich: "Would ye like teh hear about how I got mines? It honestly quite stupid but still a bit funny at the same time ya know?" NPC: "I'd rather not..." Ostrich, OOC: "Okay, I don't know why she's getting uncomfortable, my character has scars too." Kris, OOC: "Rule of thumb, if a burn mark takes up more than a few square inches, it probably comes from an event that was very traumatic." Me, OOC: "Yeah, I get what you're trying to do, but it clearly made her uncomfortable. There IS a way to pivot out of this. Introduce yourself, be like "Oh where are my manners, I forgot to introduce myself, sorry. I'm Quinn. What's your name, friend?" Like that." Ostrich, OOC: "Okay, then yes. Quinn will extend his right hand to shake her right hand and say:" Ostrich, IC: "Sorry abou tha by the way, we never introduced ourselves. My names Quinn. What's yours?" NPC, liking this conversation less and less by the second,: "Just call me Kat." Ostrich: "Nice tah meet you, Kat. Does Bud appen teh ave any other teammates, or is it just him and you fer now?" NPC: "I think my stop is coming up. I need to get off now." The NPC then proceeds to get off of the bus, fearing for her safety. If you aren't entirely sure what all just happened in that brief period, let me rewind and explain with context. Imagine you are a woman who, for whatever reason, got in a horrific accident that left your arm scarred with a burn mark, and you're very ashamed of it. You live in a metropolitan city where criminal activity is increasingly on the rise. People post missing fliers for help finding their kidnapped pokemon. Anybody who tries investigating these kidnappings ends up getting disappeared themselves, and if they DO find the pokemon that goes missing, it's likely they are already dead. You've heard horror stories like this, and you try to be careful so as to not let your Bulbasaur get kidnapped. NOW, imagine you are approached by a 6'2" mammoth of a man with scratches and bruises all over him, clearly carrying a baseball bat among his belongings, and he sits next to you, talking about your Bulbasaur. You think "Okay, he seems nice," so you start talking. Then, in rapid succession, he calls attention to your burn scar that you are ashamed of; he starts trying to ask you "You want to know how I got MY scars?"; he doesn't seem like he takes the hint that you don't want to talk about your injuries and actively tries to shake your hand to make you show it off when you don't want to; he tries to gauge exactly how many other pokemon are on your person; and furthermore, he tells you that he wants to have a pokemon exactly like yours. This man is supposed to be 'The Face' and is asking us for cues on social interaction.. Compounding this, whenever a situation made Ostrich upset--whether that be from him coming home mad about something, or something in game happened that got him mad instead of Quinn, or rolling bad dice rolls (which we had to calm him down from getting too mad about a handful of times to get him to enjoy the game again)--Quinn was upset, even when he had no in-character reason to be. As an example, our characters saw a trainer being swarmed by Wingulls. Quinn accurately theorized they were attacking the trainer because they were hungry and wanted whatever food was on him, and he distracted the Wingulls by throwing food he himself was carrying on him, over the side of the pier. It was actually a very clever move, it gave Kris and me time to get the trainer and his pokemon out of harm's way, and the Wingulls seemed to have gone away. But then a round later, the Wingulls rose back up over the pier, attacking Quinn. He showed he too had food, and now they were going to try and harass him for more instead. They didn't roll for a damaging attack, but instead rolled to Trip him, knocking him prone. They made contested acrobatics checks. He rolled a 5d6. Four of the dice came up 1. We all laughed and voiced our dismay at such terrible luck, and he fell prone. Nothing bad, just got knocked over by sky rats. Kris and I make use of our pokemon to clear away the Wingulls before they can do any more harm to him, and the battle is over. That was supposed to be the end of that. My and Kris's PCs offer to help Ostrich up, all the while offering praise for keeping the NPC's pokemon safe from the Wingulls and using that distraction ploy. He simply says his character dusts himself off, and does not answer, and follows behind the rest of the group, clenching his fists holding back his anger. Out of character we are trying to tell him his plan was great, and he simply says "It doesn't matter. Quinn is angry. Quinn wants to punt a Wingull right about now." It was not Quinn who was angry. It was Ostrich who was angry and projecting his anger onto his own character. He continued to do this well into--oh, I am missing something else. Let's dip back to what was going on with Redhead whom he flirted with and was now thinking about cheating on. At some point, our characters are resting up after a bad run-in with some criminals. Quinn gets a text on his phone, from Redhead, whom he was going to try and break up with. Quinn is sad, almost to the point of crying, as he says Redhead texted him saying they can't date anymore. Me, confused both in character AND out of character, ask his character to show me his phone. He does. It's a conversation where Redhead basically says "If you knew the truth about me, you'd hate me, so I think we should break up." Again, in-character and out-of-character, I'm confused, and yet pleasantly surprised, because A) I genuinely thought by the way Quinn was distraught that the text message was going to be her confessing to cheating on Quinn first, but it wasnt. And B) I thought Quinn didn't even want to be in a relationship with this woman, and now his expression is implying he does, so I can try to help him make it work. I suggest we go to Virbank where Redhead lives, to see her and make her feel better. Ostrich doesn't want to, because it's "too stressful." When we ask him what he does want to do, he says "I don't know." Kris and I, both in and out of character, are not just asking, but BESEECHING Ostrich to make a decision with what HE wants to do as his character, and how we should move forward, instead of us having to constantly tell him what to do because he can't be bothered . We repeatedly remind him that we have plenty of things outside of Virbank that we could be doing. So if he doesn't want to go see Redhead, and just wants to text her saying "Okay, I accept the break-up," that's fine. If he does want the three of us to go out to Virbank to see her, that's also fine too, but we NEED him to make a decision and not half-ass it, because the bus leaving town is almost here. He decides that we are in fact going to go to Virbank to see this girl, and to our surprise, he isn't going with the intent to break up with her after seeing her play. We take an 8-hour bus all the way out from Nacrene to Virbank, we get there, Quinn trips over a swarm of Wingulls, gets mad, we go see Redhead act in her play, before inviting her and her sister to a bar to have Ostrich and Redhead talk out their issues. Unfortunately, thanks to mistakes on my part, I ended up catching the attention of more of the same criminals who were after my PC, and we were made to calmly flee the bar with the help of a rogue NPC friend, but not without the criminals trying to slowly tail us as we make a plan to lose them by hiding in PokeStar Studios. The entire time that this event, which basically boiled down to a chase scene, was going on, Redhead--not at all privy to what the three of us have been through in the past few days--would be getting confused and scared as to what exactly is going on, looking to Ostrich to explain the situation. Ostrich simply tells her to be quiet and follow the group. When he isn't saying that, he is simply saying "Quinn remains silent as he makes sure his Gligar hovers closely behind" to make sure he's battle-ready for if these dudes chasing us find a way to corner us. He repeats this same idea over and over as we continue trying to lose the criminals tailing us. My character talks about making sure Redhead and her sister don't get hurt by the criminals chasing us while simultaneously feeling guilty how her possible NPC love interest got attacked by this very same group of criminals only days ago? "Quinn doesn't say anything to what Kris and OP said. Making sure Gligar is still flying overhead." Kris's character brings up how fun it would be if we tried to lose the criminals by getting lost in the crowd of PokeStar Studios while my character half-assedly says "Well, I guess if we HAVE to" to hide how excited she is about it? "Quinn stays in pace with the others while Gligar flies just overhead." Redhead NPC panickedly pulls out her ball so as to attempt to fight the criminals off while I, the person who has to roll 3d6 on Charm as opposed to Ostrich's 5d6, try to convince her to not do that because half of our pokemon are in the PKMN Center currently and those guys are probably hoping to call in the big guys for support, making her feel hurt that Quinn didn't have her back when she thought he'd agree with her on that? "Quinn says nothing but keeps moving, Gligar still flying above their heads." The GM actively had to put her foot down and say something about it, saying something to the effect of: GM: "Ostrich, I don't want t be an ass about this, but I can't accept these responses. If you can't think of anything to respond with, that's fine, we're PbP anyway, but I need you to do/say SOMETHING more than giving just single-sentence responses of your character not doing anything in this situation, especially considering we all agreed this whole arc would be for your character." His response was to edit his post to read: "Quinn says nothing but keeps moving, Gligar still flying above their heads. *He was concerned with getting to the PokeStar Studios. (edited)" When the GM and Kris both rightly called him out on this sassy-ass attitude, reiterating that we are all trying to give him a chance to have the spotlight, he says: Ostrich: "I don't want arcs or spotlight or whatever this shit feels so fuckin stressful that I don't wanna do it arcs and spotlight might be fine with Kris and OP but I don't want that stuff" Kris, GM and I are obviously shocked as he not only metaphorically throws an entire character arc we are conceding to him straight into the garbage, but as we all realize that what he is fundamentally saying is "I don't want to play a character that has to make hard decisions, I just want to play as a background character." Kris and GM again tell him what he is saying clearly amounts to as much, to which he just walks away from the chat saying "I'm gonna take a break," not responding for two whole days after that. Obviously we had to put the game on pause as a result. The pure sass in the form of a single-sentence text edit, and the statement that followed, are both the quintessential embodiment of my final point on why all of us ultimately voted for Ostrich leaving the group: Strike 3: He Never Valued The Game This may be simple speculation, but I genuinely believe considering all of his actions to this point that he did not treat this game as the social thing that it was. Every time we tried to give him something to do or work with as far as making his character contribute to the game, he did nothing with the endless resources and time and space to do anything. He frequently chose to do nothing with what we gave him. He saw it less as a role playing game for us to create a collaborative story together, and more as just a videogame to have fun in without much consequence, and only when the dice weren't going in his favor or when the sum of his actions came back to bite him did he realize that his actions actually did in fact have consequences to the detriment of the group, at which point he shuts down and stops engaging. I wish our group kicked him after the Destiny incident. It's session day. This is before the point when we decided to go PbP and sticked to one day a week. The morning of, GM tells us that she has a cold and that she'll try to nurse it well enough to be fine hosting tonight's session, but can't promise anything yet. All of us, including Ostrich, say to her individually that if she needs to postpone to rest we will support that decision. Ostrich, on the side, also says he's "waiting until I can go home because the Witchqueen DLC for Destiny 2 drops today." Several hours later, GM feels better, she's ready to go, Kris and I are hyped. Unfortunately, 1 hour before session is primed to start, he says "I won't be available for session I've been waiting for the witchqueen for months and I will be playing that tonight." This got the GM disheartened to the point where she just postponed the session that night. Game is cancelled for the night. Absolute fucking mood killer. After talking with Kris and the GM, where they shared their grievances about him several months in, I sent a message to Ostrich saying that I wanted to gather everyone together to have a talk with him about how we expect to move forward as fellow players, that the stuff that happened with the joltik swarm and the part where he forgot how BSR works was really getting under our skin and made me think he needs to focus more on how the rules of the game work, and that I'm hoping he will be willing to talk it out with us to figure out what we can do to all move forward as a group. His response: "If this is you trying to say something else, just go ahead and say it, I don't care for the cryptic shit. You already know that I already told you guys I don't learn things by reading them once or twice, my brain doesn't work like that. I learn through repetition and seeing things work, but I'm sure you've played games before with more competent people and I'm just slowing it down." Resisting the very strong urge to simply say "Yes" to what can only be seen as a complete disrespect of all the time I spent trying to help him be a good fit in the group, sending him endless resources and suggestions on how to keep his character sheet in order, helping him to memorize what all of his own feats and skills do etc., I simply tell him I'm sorry if I somehow came off as cryptic in my wording, and I apologize that my DM came in at 2am, but I would still like to know when would be a good time to meet to have this conversation. We agreed to Friday. Friday rolls around, and it seemed like he took the conversation well. From my perspective, it seemed like he genuinely understood that what we were asking of him wasn't simply to "just take the damage for our characters," but to start knowing what he wants out of this game, knowing what he wants out of his own character that he created, and knowing the rules of the game enough to work with the party, and not to its detriment. We only asked that he follow the social contract that is implicitly agreed upon when one joins a social tabletop group, which includes but is not limited to understanding how the game works, and if you don't know how something works, or you think you need a second opinion on a judgment call, just ask the group. But it's also entirely possible that perhaps he was simply "yessing" us to get us to stop nagging him. On the day that the GM finally kicked Ostrich, she randomly pulled me aside to ask my opinion of him, to which I responded by telling her everything I already had been feeling from the get-go: that he doesn't treat the game with the respect he should. That he treats it like a dating sim video game and not a storytelling game. That he, despite having been in the game for 11 months, did not remember any of even the most basic rules of combat. And most importantly, that he, when pressed to actually play his character, insists he wants to just be a background character. The GM had known my grievances as they were playing out, as we talk a lot about the game, but we all decided to afford him many chances to get himself together and never acted on it until this point. GM then tells me that she is earnestly thinking of kicking him, as he admitted to her that he no longer cares about Redhead as a character, he says coming to Virbank was a mistake, and he just wants to finish up the scene and call it a day. I am beyond mad at this point. The only reason we were in Virbank was to let him have his moment with this NPC he had been flirting with, so that he could make up with her and have her be his romantic interest. We did not force him into it. We let him naturally arrive by himself to the decision of having us go to Virbank as a group. We may have chided him in and out of character about demonstrating indecisiveness at a point where we needed to make a decisive choice, but ultimately we left it to him to choose where we go next. And here we see that not only does he tell us that he thinks coming here was a mistake, and he no longer cares about this NPC we literally got on an 8-hour bus ride to go see. I immediately voiced my opinion that if I were the GM I would want to kick him, but that it is ultimately the GM's choice of what we do with him. I tell her that he ultimately needs to show that he treats the game as more than JUST a game (weird to say it like that, but you know what I mean I'm sure). We needed to know where he stands. GM then calls to pause the PbP we were doing, pulls Ostrich aside into DMs, and asks Ostrich exactly how much does he value the game we are playing as a group. At 6:20, she sends the text via DMs. No immediate response, but whatever. At 6:50, Ostrich makes a post in RP responding to one of Kris's or my prior statements in-character. We all obviously know he is not afk. At 7:30, she tells us all she wants to pause the RP we are doing, so she can continue to try and speak to Ostrich with her full attention. We pause, waiting for GM to do whatever she's doing. He still does not respond despite clearly being online. GM gives him two more hours to respond until she finally asks him if he has any intention of answering the question or not. His excuse: "You specifically said to pause." GM obviously refutes the excuse by telling him she said to pause LONG AFTER she sent the initial question, but he refuses to give a valid answer, instead evading it however way he can. GM eventually gets sick of it, realizing that he is so indecisive and flighty that he can't even be bothered to answer how much he is willing to commit to a tabletop game, and tells him outright that he needs to leave. While the GM was very sad to have to make that call to tell him he no longer has a spot at the table, I--and even Kris who brought Ostrich to the table--were in full support of the decision. As of writing this, it has been about one week since we kicked him from the group, and we have already found another player who the GM and I get along well with. I'm very confident this new player will be a great fit for our group. The sad thing is, on the day we spoke to Ostrich as a group, I responded to his statement about having played with "more competent players and clearly I'm just slowing it down" by telling him this: "I'm not going to out and out say "yes", but what I will say is, there is a public discord filled with upwards of 3000 people specifically dedicated to helping people find a game that is as cool as this one that we've been playing for almost a year now. If for any reason you ended up not being at this table anymore, it would not take very long to find a replacement who knows the rules and knows what type of character they want, and what they want out of the game experience." Ostrich, if you happen to stumble upon this and read this far in to the end, I want to say that I really hope that you're able to talk to somebody about what's going on and the underlying problems you're facing. And I hope you understand that, as pretentious as it may sound to say, the only reason you were asked to leave is because you got in your own way. TL;DR, a player spends a whole year not knowing the rules of the system or character he's playing and actively telling the group he wants to essentially be a background character, before being kicked from the group because he couldn't answer the simple question of how much value he places in the group and the game

As The Bloodline makes their entrance we see footage from them arriving earlier this week where they are interviewed by Byron Saxton but the they quickly interrupted by Riddle rolling through on his scooter. Sami says he's gonna kill someone while the Usos say he and Elias are gonna learn what happens to every other tag team that steps up. Elias comes out of a tour bus and his attacked from behind by Solo who throws him into a guardrail. In the ring Jimmy says the Bloodline is officially in your city but says unfortunately the tag title match is canceled because the enforcer Solo attacked him earlier. Jimmy says the good news is Riddle saved himself some embarrassment and Elias can work on a new song. Sami says bet and when asked why he just says it just felt like a good time. Jimmy says anyone can step up because no matter who it is they're the twos, and we the ones. Riddle comes out and says it wasn't cool of them to deny Elias his first tag titles and says it wasn't very Ucey of them to run for a right. Sami tells him it isn't his right to decide what is and isn't Ucey and calls himself a certified Uce-ologist. He says Solo destroying Elias was Ucey, the Usos continuing to be the longest reigning champions in history is also Ucey. But Riddle thinking he and Elias had a chance wasn't very Ucey tells him to just head on back. Riddle says he did find another tag partner and there will be a tag title match tonight, even though they don't get along they both hate the Bloodline. Kevin Owens makes his way down and storms to the ring with Riddle.
The Bloodline put the boots to Riddle after their victory but Owens runs in with a steel chair to cause them to retreat but Kevin gives chase to The Usos and Sami. Solo remains in the ring to beat down Riddle and lifts up his taped thumb to deliver a Samoan Spike to Riddle's throat! He then hits Umaga's running charge in the corner before grabbing a chair and placing it around Riddle's neck to deliver another charge onto the chair and Riddle's throat. Solo walks off as EMT's attend to Riddle, placing a neck brace on him and hauling him off on a stretcher.
The Judgment Day are Backstage where Rhea Ripley says Bayley and Asuka are both incredible, but they aren't Rhea Bloody Ripley. She says when she's done with them tonight and moves onto Bianca Belair the whole Raw women's locker room will be calling her mami.
JBL welcomes the locker room to his Poker Invitational and says it'll become as big as the Masters and Wrestlemania. He says that they all have their differences, and no one likes Tozawa, but poker is a gentlemen's game so no cheating at the table. Dexter Lumis walks in holding the bag of money he won from last week but JBL tells him it's an invitational and this freak wasn't invited, plus he just signed a contract so there's no way he has the buy-in. Dexter empties the piles of cash on the table and JBL says he's in.
Bayley comes down to the ring when she's interrupted by Becky Lynch entering through the crowd saying she was reminiscing about beating down Bayley and her cronies last week and it got her thinking. It had been three years since they last faced off, first Bayley held down the division during the Tunderdome era, and then Becky came back and Bayley was gone. Bayley says Becky thinks she can do whatever she wants and just wants the spotlight on her but she doesn't care about anyone but herself unlike Bayley. While Becky was gone Bayley says she was looking out for the future which is why she brought along Iyo and Dakota and tells the fans they have no respect for what she's trying to do. Becky admits Bayley is looking out for Damage CTRL, and two thirds of them have been successful, two champions and one loser. Becky wishes her luck in her match tonight and says maybe they can go one on one if she's woman enough to face the man. Becky walks to the back as Rhea comes down for her match and the two stare down in the asile until Rhea circles around Becky, never taking her eyes off of Becky as she backs her way towards the ring.
Seth Rollins makes his way to the ring and welcomes us to Monday Night Rollins, he says he's got some breaking news for DC, in one week he will go one on one with Bobby Lashley and the winner will be the new number one contender for the United States Championship. He says he's got plenty to say to Bobby but it isn't as fun without him out here and he wants to have some fun. Lashley makes his way down to the ring and asks Seth what he wanted to tell him but warns him to be careful. Seth says Lashley hasn't been the same since he lost to Brock Lesnar and asks what his obsession is with Brock, wondering if he's scared of him. Bobby says Seth is just trying to rattle him, but Seth says he's clearly not scared of Brock, maybe he's just jealous that Brock is a bigger star and had the career Lashley wish he had. Bobby grabs Seth by the collar and holds up up saying this has nothing to do with Brock, this is between them and the United States Championship. Once he's released Seth says the US Title won't fill the void from losing to Brock and that if this is his mental state then beating him next week will be even easier than last time. Bobby snaps and strikes Seth and the two Brawl to the outside. Bobby picks up Seth but he pokes at Lashley's eyes as WWE officials try and pull the two apart. Seth is able to break free and charges at Lashley until they are separated again. Seth gets in the ring and goads Lashley who rushes back. Officials hold the two in opposite corner until they both charge at eachother, Bobby goes to spear Rollins but he dodges so instead Lashley spears Petey Williams.
Backstage Austin Theory calls Seth and Bobby the past and some challengers won't mean much to his forever reign. Mustafa Ali is nearby and tells Theory he better not be cashing in his chips to early, but then says maybe he shouldn't have said "cash-in". Theory says Ali is so annoying and that he wants to shut him up for good so he'll put the US Title on the line against him tonight to finish things once and for all.
Back at JBL's Poker invitational Chad Gable folds and says poker is just a game of brainsmenship and knowing when to walk away. Luke Gallows calls him a nerd and the two shout nerds and shoosh back and forth until Corbin tells them to shut up so he can get a read on Lumis. He thinks he's bluffing so he calls him, only for Lumis to respond with a full house with. Corbin says Lumis is clearly cheating when Dexter places an axe on the table. At the other table Dominik tries to steal some of Tozawa's chips and Akira calls him out on it but Dominik says he doesn't care since he's got the Judgement Day to back him up and says Tozawa is as short as his deadbeat dad. JBL interjects and says Tozawa is probably as much of a deadbeat as Rey but there's no fighting in the Poker room and tells them to take it outside. Akira says he'll meet Dominik in the ring.
Ziggler attacks Austin Theory during his match causing a DQ. Mustafa Ali then argues with Ziggler until Theory attacks them both and lays out Ziggler with A-Town Down.
Outside the poker game the Miz asks why he didn't receive an indentation to the Invitational. JBL says he didn't know Miz was a card player and as long as he can pay the buy-in he's good. Miz says because of some financial issues lately he doesn't have much liquid cash but says he's good for it. JBL says he can't just allow it so Miz offers his Rolex instead but John points out it's a fake.
In the poker room Baron Corbin reveals a set of four kings but when he goes to collect his pot extra cards fall out of his sleeves and he is called out by AJ Styles and The OC with the Alpha Academy backing up Corbin. They start to argue until JBL snaps and tells them not to fight in here and that they're a bunch of barbarians. AJ tells Corbin to get his ring on as the table clears except for Lumis. Johnny Gargano says it seems like they won so Lumis scoops his winnings into the bag and throws a wad of bills towards the dealer.
Bianca Belair is interviewed backstage, she says what Bayley did tonight was impressive but she already knows how to handle Bayley and she'd be happy to face any of the women, even Rhea. When talking about the second triple threat, Alexa has proven to her why she used to be champion, Nikki is a wildcard, and she knows a lot about Becky and that she's always a challenge but says she stays ready so she doesn't have to get ready.
Candice LeRae is interviewed backstage, she says she's now a marked woman by Damage CTRL, and while she's new to Raw she knows all of them very well. She says she has more to fight for than ever now and isn't going to let anyone push her around. Johnny and Dexter run into her and tells her they won at poker and shows her the winnings which shocks her.
The Judgement Day are about to beat down Akira Tozawa but the Street Profits run down to even the odds and cause The Judgement Day to back off.
Adam Pearce tells Bobby Lashley that he didn't just strike an official tonight, he damn near cut him in half. He knows it was an accident but warns him not to let it happen again. Bobby warns him to keep his little cronies out of the lions den and to not let anyone stand in his way.
During the main event Iyo Sky and Dakota Kai attack Becky Lynchm dragging her out of the ring and hit her with a double powerbomb through the announce table.
